I have a 95 and was able to replace the batterys in a remote without reprograming.

I looked through my Chiltons repair manual and couldn't find any info on programing remotes. Sorry.

Have you searched this forum? Searched the internet?

There are 2 different procedures for the 98...an early type, and a later type.

Is your remote FCC: GQ43VT4T or GQ43VT11T?

The precedure is in the owner's manual. If you do not have one there is a location online. (I can't remember where) but someone here will know.;

i do not know if this will work but i had a vaxhaul ( i am from the uk.) and to re-program the remote you had to put keys in the ignition and then press the lock then unlock on the key-fob...worth a go..

You have to turn on and off the ignition 8 times and then press any key on a known programmed remote and then any key on an unprogrammed one.

I don't believe removing the battery to change it will cause any lost programming with the remotes.

You know.....I think the car gets programed to the remote. Not the remote to the car. The remote is just a transmitter. There is no way for the car to tell it (the remote) anything.

Yes, the car is programmed to the remotes, however, the procedure is different between the early 98 and later 98 model Windstars, since they had different remotes.
