My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee is shaking violently and shutting off. At first, I was told it was possibly the fuel pump and proceeded to have that checked out. It turned out that was not the problem. I then replaced the fuel filter, as it might be clogged from running my Jeep to empty very often. After replacement it ran fine for about a day and a half and then I proceeded to have problems again. I put fuel injector fluid into the gas tank to see if that would remedy the problem but no dice. I drove it down the street the other day and it ran fine until all of a sudden, it struggled and shut off again. I have been having problems since, with it shaking, running poorly and eventually shutting off. Any ideas?

does it help (keep it alive) if you give it gas?
Does it do it when driving, with gas pedal pressed?

Does this only happen when your tank is low? You could have some gunk or water in the tank. Try some HEET or Drigas, something to remove water from your tank.

Sounds like the fuel pump. My sister's JGC 1995 had the same symptoms. It ran fine some days, and others it would sputter and die.

To get back to all of your replies, I tried to put Heet in the tank thinking that it could be water in the line but that did not seem to help at all. And no, it happens all the time, whether or not I have a full tank or it is near the bottom.

It happens when I turn the car on and pressing the gas pedal does not help

Does it do it while idling/driving? engine warm/cold/any time?

Does it do it in park or every gear.

It did it in park and all gears, now it is having trouble turning over at all and is making a click click noise when I turn the key

Your battery is prolly dead that is the reason for the clicking.

I understand the reason for the clicking but do you have any ideas as to what is causing the fuel flow problem?

It has to be the fuel pump. They work sometimes and quit sometimes. Check the fuel pressure when the vehicle is sputtering. They're not too hard to change, you might even be able to change it without removing the gas tank.
