'90 Suburban failed to start up this morning

I have a 1990 Suburban (350 CID / 4x4) w/198k on the clock. It always cranked and started right up 'till this morning. Cranks well, but will not fire. There has been some occasional 'bucking' recently while accelerating up hill, but nothing that prevents me from achieving and maintaining highway speed. I figure it's got to be either an ignition or fuel delivery issue.

While I can see from reading prior posts that this not a new topic, I haven’t read about any cases just like this.

Wondering what obvious steps to take so I don't replace a lot of components unnecessarily.

Since the fuel pump seems to be located somewhere other than where it's been mounted for years on 5.8L motors, it makes at least that step in trouble shooting difficult.

Thanks for any input.

Sounds like you may want to check your ignition coil.

Pump is in the fuel tank. Do you see fuel coming from the injectors at startup?

I also agree on checking the ignition coil.

Not being a smart "A" here but I hope the poster fixed this after 8 months!

He may have, but at least we have some answers here that can help when someone else has the same problem.

I also have a '90 (now 400,000 original miles).

Mysterious crank/no start happened to me a couple of years ago. Turned out to be a fried rotor. I was using Accel caps and rotors with a Jacobs hot igniton, changing at 50,000 mile intervals. This particular rotor failed at 17,000. Now back to a heavy-duty all-GM ignition, no problems.

Also, have you ever changed your fuel filter? I do it annually, about 30,000 miles. At that point I can't blow through them, they're so clogged.

Only had to change fuel pump once, at 150,000 miles, so this could be your problem. A bit of a hassle as you have to drain and drop the fuel tank to get at it. My BMWs have the tank under the rear seat so you just pull the bottom seat cushion and pull the pump from the top of the tank. Would like to retrofit an EXTERNAL pump to my Suburban but have never gotten around to it.
