i have a major problem here answer to it. i was traveling at 60 mph and the engine just died. i tried the fuel pressure releif and it sprayed me in the face. so i tried the shade tree way of getting fire on the spark plug wire. guess what? no fire. i took the cap off to see if there was problem there. everything looked fine, so rolled the engine over and the button did not turn. so i took out the distributor to fine the answer, but everything looked fine. the engine turns normal, so do not think anything is wrong with the crank. but i did want to mess with the timing gears. help please??????!!!!!!!

When you cranked the engine with the distributor out, did you check to see if the cam shaft was actually turning? If cam shaft not turning, suggest timing belt bad. If turning, look for a roll pin somewhere on the distributor shaft sheared.

Engine size?? sounds like a 6 cyl, look for a sheared distributor gear pin. If it is then make sure the shaft turns real free. If it doesn't, pull the shaft out of the distributor and clean the max out the shaft and the housing. do the same thing if it is a v8 too. But the 6's were the pin breakers.

if this is a six, then likely the dist gear roll pin has sheared, though it is possible that the timing gears have broken.

if this is a V8 the likely the timing chain has broken.
