fill-up problem

After owning (and working on- constantly) a POS Jeep Grand Cherokee for the last 3 years, it thrills me to no end to finally get to ask a question about some meaningless problem like this:

I've got a 2000 4-Runner and I love it. But I do have one question that I was wondering if you guys experience the same thing. When I'm filling the gas tank up and the handle clicks off when it's supposed to be full, I can still ease a whole lot more gas in the tank 10-20 cents at a time. I mean I filled up today and the handle clicked off at $43.00. I kept easing gas in it and finally stopped at $50.00. I could have put more in it. Every other vehicle I've owned when the handle clicks off like that you're lucky to get another dollar in it. I was just wondering is this a characteristic of this model or has mine got a specific problem?

It's normal for your vehicle. Don't fill it much beyond the click-off of the pump. There is head-space in the tank which allows for expansion in heating of the gasoline and prevents filling the charcoal canister with liquid gasoline.

Same problem here, but if i'm not supposed to keep filling it up, why does the gas gauge take a nose dive in the first 20 miles of driving? Are there gas gauge problems with 4Runners?

Yes, there was a problem with '99-'00 4Runners where the gas gauge or sender unit was badly calibrated from the factory.

Moving off of the Full mark soon after filling is normal. Dropping down to 1/2 tank immediately is a problem. :

Thanks. Mine's a '98 4cyl. and in the first half a tank, it gets about 150ish miles, the second half is like 190ish. I'm speculating on the last half because i've never run it out of gas. Also, if its supposed to be an 18 gal tank, how much of that volume is not used due to the space required in the top?

Don't know. I've never been able to fit more than 15 gal in it. You don't want to take a chance on filling your charcoal canister with liquid fuel.
