I would like to find out how many miles people are getting on their original trannys. You may also include what type of maitenance was done to it.
Dan
I have a 95 with around 180,000 on the original tranny (second set of headgaskets). The previous owner had the fluid flushed before most every summer vacation drive. This was their primary transportation.

I have almost 110,000 original miles on my trans and have no problems whatsoever. I've owned the van 2 yrs and changed the fluid right when I bought it. Prior to changing the fluid, I ran AutoRx (auto-rx.com) thru the trans (and motor). I believe the 'transfusion' is the best way to change the trans fluid (assuming your not experiencing any mechanical problems) because it reverse flushed both the trans as well as the transfer case.

We got to 120,000 miles on our '98 before complete transmission melt down during our summer vacation this year. Maintenance on it was light and sporadic. No other problems, no engine codes, etc. until the tranny died.

Hi
131000 on our '96 with no trouble. I changed the fluid
and filter via the pan drop method at 55000 and 115000 ( we bought it at 39500). I also changed the fluid only - pumped it dry via the transmission cooler line at 95000. On the advice of a friend who managed a fleet of ford vans with similar trannies I also got in the habit early on of turning off the OD when below freeway speed.
Never a burp thus far.

My '96 3.8L transmission was replaced at just over 99k miles. I bought the van used....3 years old....off lease,,,with about 37K miles. Trailer hitch...and some scratches on the sides of the rear bumper cover indicate that it was used for towing....but I do not know what towing. I had the fluid and filter changed each 30K miles at the dealer. I now have 156K miles....and change the fluid myself. My '96 calls for Mercon.....I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, and have installed a 37,500 Lbs GVW rated auxilary tranny cooler.

If you're talking about the tranny fluid exchanges that Jiffy Lube and others do it does not reverse flush or clean the filter, it just uses the tranny pump to pump out old fluid while new fluid is pumped in.

1997 Windstar .My trans made it to 288000 kilometers ( 179000 miles ) . I bought it at 200000 kms and did the trans flush and filter right away. Cause of failure was the pump blew apart which I understand to be a rare cause.

1999 Windstar SE 65K, Family van has had 2 fluid changes and that van is cosmetically falling apart. 5 days ago the rear climate controls fell out of the headliner.

I am referring to a T-Tech machine, not anything to do with Jiffy Lube, but the T-tech machines do flush forward. Also, I never said anything about a filter at all .

What you said was that the T-Tech flush machine "reverse flushes the trans and transfer case" which is what a lot of service stations tell customers in order to not drop the pan and change the filter. It does not reverse flush or flush at all, it's merely a fluid exchange using the tranny pump.

I have a 1998 Windstar which just turned 178,000 miles on the original transmission. It has had the automatic transmission fluid changed at 60,000 and 100,000 by the flush method by Ford. I change it myself now using the drop pan method. I have changed it once a year over the last 3 years whether it needs it or not due to the high mileage. I have towed with this vehicle also several times pulling a Uhaul full size trailer. Oh by the way this Windstar has the 3.0 Liter engine in it and it has been equally realiable no head gasket problems like in the 3.8 liter engine.

2001 with 88,000 miles or so on it.. Change the fluid twice so far when it turns dark in color, so far thats been once a year. When i first got the van the tranny started slipping. I had the dealer do there fluid change and had in done the second time a year later, so in May I will most likely have it done again.

I bought my 99 with about 100,000 KM. I have no reason to believe the transmission was ever worked on nor do I know of any maintenace up to that point. I now have 170,000 KM and I have dropped the pan and changed the fluid (about 6-7 litres at a time twice). I replaced the filter once.

Hi,
I bought 3.0L 96 Wini in June 2005, changed the oil at 198.000km (pan drop). There where no problems with tranny till winter. Now at steady speed about 50km/h it seems the tranny doesn't know what to do - increases and decreases about 100 the RPM whithout changing the gear. I speed up a bit and everything is OK. What could this be?

It could be the range sensor.. located on the tranny. Not too hard of a fix if thats the problem..

I have a 1996 that is just about to roll 356,000 km on the original transmission. There has been very minor and sporatic maintanence done to it but I think the transmission speed (range) sensor has just gone on me in the last couple of days.

One more thing - when it's cold, looks like the tranny looses the gear on first yards of driving . When I start moving the first 50-100 yards it doesn't want to change to 2 gear (unless I push the needle to 3,5 RPM) and when I release the gas pedal it looses the gear. If I gentle push the gas pedal and release the routines vary from 1000-2500 but I it seems the clutch doesn't connect tranny with engine. After those 100 yards I have to slow down, and it gets the 1 gear. Then everything works as usually - 1 gear, 2 gear etc.

I have a 99 winstar. I bought it with around 145,000 miles and now have about 155,000 miles. Original motor and trans. Going to fix a small trans leak this week, but other than that, it runs and drives like it was new.
