1995 Bonneville MPG

I am contemplating getting a 1995 Bonneville with 55k mis in good shape for $1700. I am considering the car since my mechanic buddy tells me I should get around 30 mpg knowing how I drive and it will last me a long time. I'm buying mainly to save fuel costs over my 15 mpg truck. Can I count on this 28-30 mpg or is it a fluke to get these numbers? If I get 22-25 mpg the purchase makes much less sense.

Thanks,
KNUKEY

My 1998 Bonny with much higher mileage got 22-26 in the city (heavy-footed driver) up to 27-30 with mostly freeway driving with some city mixed in. Not sure if you'll get 30 mpg all the time, but if you're spending most of your time on the open freeway, you should do alright (if the car is running properly)

i don't know whether your car is an SE, SSE, or SSEi, but for an SE without the supercharged engine gets 29 hwy...so you should be set

I think its an SE. I have not seen it to date, just relying on what my buddy tells me. I think I can count on 27 mpg average driving for me, better of course on a road trip. I drove his '92 Park Avenue and really liked it. It had plenty of power (Series I engine) and I think I ran over two people, but I couldn't feel 'em...I think I'll buy it.

I would say that 22-24 mpg overall is more realistic, and if you have the 2.84:1 final drive ratio transaxle, 32-34 mpg highway. If the car has the 3.08:1 ratio, expect a little less.

I have two Olds 88s (same drive train) a 95 & 98 and previously another 95 and I average 19 to 24 and thats in the Northeast but very consistant, good luck.

If it's an 95 SE stock with a good tune up, you should probably average 21-23 mpg combined driving. Sustained highway mileage would be approximately 27-28 mpg. I think the fuel consumption rating on the car when new was like 21-29 mpg. You will never get more than 29 mpg, it's just not possible with the car being stock. That mpg is far better than 15 mpg though, isn't it?

My wife's 96 Bonneville SE consistantly gets 24 - 25 doing normal country road driving. When on the highway we get 34 - 38. Maybe that's just mine though.

How do you calculate 34-38 mpg? The car was rated at 29 mpg hywy maximum when brand new. You can't get any more out of the 3800 with out some serious mods.

"29 mpg hwy maximum"??? That is the EPA rated mileage, it has NOTHING to do with maximum mileage you can get from a vehicle. BTW, I bought a 1993 Lesabre (Series I) and after three tanks of HIGHWAY driving I am averaging 30 MPG.

My wife and I live in New York. We have made round trips to Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The worst we ever got was 34 on the one to Florida, but the fuel tank was leaking a little on that trip. After the tank was replaced the next 2 trips averaged between 36 & 38 based on the number of miles divided by the number of gallons it took to fill the tank. No mods, at least that I know of. I bought the car used.
