Hopping while tight turning: Friction modifier?Ackie 10-03-2005, 07:56 PM Hi there, I have a GJ 2002 (45k mi). When I make a tight turn, while driving very slowly (also with a cold engine), I hear a cluncking sound and the car is hopping. It seems like the problem is originating somewhere from the front axle. The dealer I recently bought it from couldn't find it (or at least not reproduce the problem), so I brought it to a certified jeep dealer. It turned out that the transmission fluid was completely burned and there was no friction modifier added to the transfer case? Now it has been cleaned, new transmission fluid and the friction modifier has been added. I picked it up last week but the problem is still there, but they assured me that it would go away after a couple of hundred miles since it takes time for that solution/modifier to completely do its job. Is that true? Does it take time before this compound or fluid does its job??? Does anybody know??? please help mdavis123 10-05-2005, 03:07 PM Does your front axle have a limited slip option? I don't know if they even come with one, but is sounds like the diff. discs slipping which would be normal. Or, the symptoms sound like your are in 4wd. Could the 4wd be stuck on? Did you say you had the full time awd? Ackie 10-05-2005, 04:08 PM Does your front axle have a limited slip option? (quadra drive) It always has 4wd enabled there is no other option (besides driving in 4W LO). So does that change your idea about what could be the problem? Thanks JDPascal 10-05-2005, 06:45 PM I believe only the rear diff would have limited slip and require the LS additive. The LS diff can give a certain amount of "hopping" around if the additive is lacking Your QuadraDrive needs a special fluid to satisfy the needs of chain lubrication and the clutch pack friction that gives you constant 4wd. You could get the dealer or someone to change the TCase fluid with the correct jeep part # and see if that helps. It may also have gone on long enough that the clutches need replacing. JD Thanks JDpascal. Meanwhile the dealer has done that and added the friction modifier, but does it take a couple of hundred miles before this compound actually works as they say (because the hopping is still there)? JDPascal 10-05-2005, 10:32 PM I would humor them. If there isn't a change after 500 miles, I would look a little deeper into the t-case. Or the LS diff if you have one. Did they do the oil change and additive in the t-case and the diff or just one of them? Which one? - sounds like it was the t-case. My experience with the LS diffs is that the effect is very quickly noticable. Not sure about the t-case tho..... Can't see right now why it would be different JD JDPascal 10-05-2005, 10:38 PM by the way Ackie, your transfer case is different than the ZJ's 249. I think it is a NV247 but someone else might know better. The 249 takes regular ATF. yours needs the "special" stuff. If someone changed it and only used ATF, that would likely cause a problem.
