Clunk in rear Diff....Sprint45 10-03-2005, 04:50 PM 98 Trooper 3.5 V6 Need a little clarification....was ready past threads about the clunk in the rear differential when stopping and starting, but all the repairs seem to pertain to the Amigo and rodeo. Does anyone have the steps for the Trooper. mine has the noise as the trooper rolls to a stop. The Rodeo directions are good but the Trooper doesn't have the boot at the slip joint so i was just wondering about the procedure for this model. However, Am i correct in assuming it is the same problem? Clunk noise in the rear when stopping? The rodeo thread sounds like the same problem but could it be something different. Of course the dealer said it was normal for the mileage (110,000) but i did notice it went away for a while after i replace the Differential fluid, but now it is back again.... Thanks amigo-2k 10-03-2005, 05:42 PM you're inluck. your slip joint has a grease zerk. give it 10 pumps of grease and see what happens. Sprint45 10-13-2005, 12:43 PM Amigo, Did the lube on the zerks, and it's still there. I noticed when i replaced the Diff. oil earlier this year it disappered, but now has returned. any chance that the Limited Slip additive is worn or the oil is worn and it needs to be replaced again? (@9,000 miles). It's not loud just annoying to the DW, and the dealer a yr ago said they all get like this as they get older (120,000 miles). Thanks for the help marcre 10-13-2005, 01:25 PM You may want to check the level of the fluid. If it seems fine, change it again. Take the diff. cover off to get all the old fluid out and have a look inside. See if everything looks good. Fill it back up and see how it works.
