When trying to leave work, my '97 Malibu just turns over and over like it is out of gas. I checked the fuel relay(by trading it out w/ the horn relay) it was not that. The fuel guage also is on dead empty, which I know is not so. But, I still got 2 gallons of gas and put it in to just make sure. I finally had it towed home. I disconnected the positive battery cable(which is incorrect) and that caused my fuel guage needle to flip around to the other side of the peg. Like many of the other users that have had non stop off and on problems w/ that anti-theft system, I have too. Important Note: I had my ignition module replaced 2 weeks ago by getting a used one and having the dealership "recode it".( $45 for part and $285 at dealership). This same problem occured about 2 months ago while once again, I am trying to leave work( w/ a $12,000 deposit to drop off) and have to hang out in the parking lot for 2 hrs. when it finally started. Well, this time it never would. I should also tell you that this Malibu has the 2.6 liter Engine. It is very very hard to believe that Chevrolet never did anything to repair/replace this so-called anti-theft "your stranded so enjoy it" system till many years after my '97 Malibu. All readers that have found the solution to this "you're out of gas" etc. problem, My family and I would greatly appreciate it !!

After reading all of the helpful situations, this is what I did. I turned the ignition key on and just let it sit there for around 20 minutes. I went back out and presto my $300 fuel pump replacement was not needed. It cranked up! I'll cross my fingers for the future. LOL
