Rod bearings

Hello

I just want to put in a post about high miles (175,000 +)on a 3.8 and rod bearings. About a year ago I got a 95 Windstar that needed head gaskets. Before I did the gasket job, I heard a tick, tick, tick, tick on start up while the oil psi was building up. Well, when I had the motor apart, I toot the time to check the rod bearings. Sure enough, I could see copper on the inserts. (Copper = bad) For $35 I put in a set of rod bearings. Rod #6 was the one that was doing the most of the talking. Now, I don't hear anything (bearing relasted) on startup.

So, if you're hearing some ticking going on before the oil psi is build up I would pull the oil pan and replace the rod bearings before you have a rod with a unplanned visit. That is if your crank is not damaged yet.

Added on 10/8/05 Any one out there hearing rod noises on startup?

Is it difficult to replace the rod bearings?

I have a terribly loud tapping noise that is in sync with the RPMs.

I had a cut #1 plug wire and after replacing the plugs and wires and the lower manifold gaskets this noise began. I just replaced the rocker arms, push rods and lifters in the #1 cylinder thinking one of those were foulded up, but no luck.

Could a bad oil filter be causing such a noise?
