98 Sebring Conv. stalls at low speed

My 98 sebring 2.5 v-6 has begun to stall intermittenly at low speeds. Will be driving and it just dies, at low speeds. It has started up right away, today it took about half an hour after sitting in the middle of the road. It began a few weeks ago. Prior to that I had a fuel system clean done at jiffy lube. Since the stalling I have had wires/plugs/rotor/distributor/fuel filter changed.

Took it back to my mechanic today after I got it started and he is perplexed, (he's actually pretty good and honest) He said to pick-up a fuel pump relay at dealer and we'll try that. I read some of the postings on your site and came across one that said that relays dont work intermittenly and so before I go out and get one, I thought I'd ask you guys for some help. I have been thinking it may be the fuel pump. Any comments? Help.

Well Id suggest your mechanic to look at the alternator belt. I own a 99 sebring convert and when i bought it, the car would randomly stall-but start up again no problem. It sounds like your problem may be slightly different but it cant hurt to check, right? hope this helps

I have a 96 doing the same thing. It has been to the mechanic several times. This site has some pretty good advice. Mine is pulling a P1296 code from Autozone. It appears that the Chryslers are known for this and some have fixed the problem by changing the crank sensor. Some have changed out the distributor etc. Good luck with it. If I figure mine out I will let you know. I have been dumping all kinds of gas treatment in the tank and it will run better for awhile and then start again. I found that when it sits for 3 or 4 weeks it gets worse. Fortunately mine usually starts right up but it is dangerous when pulling out into traffic. Mine also trys to stall at the higher speeds but it catches again.

Has the fuel/air filter been changed? These two things will always give you stalling issues at idle/low speed.

I have a 1998 sebring and I have had this exact same problem with my car. I have had to change my Idle control sensor, the M.A.P sensor and there is one other sensor that was changed and nothing has helped, I also had the spark plugs, distributor cap and the air and fuel filters. I have also had to have the transmission and about to change the starter out and then both of the outside door handles broke off a week apart. I have not even had this car for 2 yrs. I am about to sell it and be done with it.

Good luck and please if anyone knows what else I can do, please let me know

I have a 99 convertible. I was trying my last resort. I was going to replace the fuel pump. I pulled the fuel pump from the gas tank. I found that the electrical connection, which is located inside the tank, was burned out. Yes, burned out. I don't know exactly how that could happen without an explosion, but it did. I havn't replaced the wiring harness yet, but I believe this will be the solution to our problem.

I replaced the fuel filter when I first bought the car.

The problem was the MAP Sensor. Seems it was telling my car it was building too much pressure so it shut it down (which it should do if working properly as a safety measure). Once it was replaced it worked perfectly and I have since put 14,000 miles on it in the last six months.

Also I found it very helpful to enroll in AllData which gives you trouble shoooting tips and is used by many mechanics. It helped us decipher the codes etc. I had taken it to a mechanic who had put it on his computer, and also Autozone but ended up turning the switch on and off and reading the codes myself per AllData's instructions.

Hope this helps someone else. Seems the stalling can be caused by other things than the MAP Sensor when we replaced the relay going to it my problem has disappeared.

Good Luck

Teri

OK, the fuel filter was not the problem after all that. I found a good place to take the car to and put it on a diagnostic. They found that it was the crankshaft position sensor. I haven't looked up what or where this sensor is, but the car is driving down the road. Good luck
