Hello:

I was looking at the K&N website and I found the following partnumber: 63-1032
It's for their Aircharger system, it replaces the Airbox system in the Xterra/Frontier.
It's not just one of those cone shape filters that attach to the stock Airbox "Hose".

http://www.knfilters.com/aircharger/aircharger.htm

Following the links in their website, it seems to be around $225.00.

Is anyone using this system? How good is it?

Thanks for your help guys!

Cedrec

I've had it installed for several weeks now.
Look for a review on XOC in about a week (running a few tanks of gas through for mileage testing).

There is definitely more power, from 2500 RPM up, which is where I need it at this altitude with bigger tires and heavy gear on board. Passing is easier than it used to be.

More power down low would be nice, but there is really no way to get that without internal engine modifications.

Where did you buy yours from Ian/XOC?

Sorry , didn't know you did K&N, but I just sent you a Winch order at Sales@Extreme4x4Parts.com! :)

Install only took and hour and a half, that included taking out the old airbox system. I took on of the rubber grommets/screwposts out so the bracket would sit lower. It just sat up to hi with the grommet in place.

You only here the difference and feel it above 2500rpm. Highway cruising and idle the noise isn't any different. This will definitely help when passing on the highways, that is where I seem to need it the most!!!

What do you mean too high ?
The rubber edge should have a couple marks in it from the hood just touching it to make a nice seal. I see one of yours.

I'll compare mine to ChuckH's tonight. It just looks that it will sit to high when I close the hood, I am probably being over concerned is all?

ChuckH

I thought it looked pretty high too, so I closed my hood very carefully the first time. I can see where the hood comes down on the rubber seal, but the seal allows a lot of squish.

Let me say again that my truck really moves now! :D

Well, a little bit better. Doubtful it's more than 5-10hp. A lot of it is the placebo intake noise effect.

Drag race someone in PNWX with a stock intake and post the results.

I look forward to seeing your review. If it really works, I would like to have one.

Funny you should mention drag racing? I was gonna run against ChuckH since he has the Gibson Exhuast. Then also run against Schlud, since he is stock but has all the same appliances on his truck (bumpers, winch skids, and sliders!

I just installed my winch by myself! Fuck...never do that again! 3 1/2 hours! Unbolt ARB, tilt it down, bolt in Winch, bolt ARB back up, wire winch, reconnect two sets of lights and ARB turn signals, reinstall Fabritron skid and test it all!

Time for some beers...........

I took the placebo effect into account and I still think I got maybe 25 HP between the Gibson and the Aircharger. Remember, we are near sea level so we should get substantially more effect than you.

Rick and I went for a drive yesterday and worked the trucks a bit. We figure all told he was about the same weight or maybe 30 lbs heavier. I was following and was able to rum with him, but couldn't seem to gain on him and he doesn't have the exhaust. However, he was on stock tires and getting out of the corners sooner and so was on the gas sooner. One thing to note, however, was that i couldn't even keep up with him before engine mods or before the 150 lbs worth of sliders I added, for some reason.

The only way to really know the differences would be a straight line drag race, but where the hell do we do that and get away with it? We would have to agree on starting reves, shift points, etc and would have to trade trucks and do averages. I don't know where we could get the space AND time to do that legally. Of course we would have to have a stock truck too and weigh everyon's trucks.

All that said, I know I'm getting better acceleration because the minivans with 6 kids in them aren't running away from me anymore with 1/4 throttle.

And yes, I like all the noise! :D

ChuckH,
seattle international raceway (now pacific raceway) is about 20 mins from ricks place. you can go pretty much any wednesday, friday or saturday and race. its only about 10 bucks and you'll get a true time slip.

Will they let SUV's in? I didn't think they would, but I guess using the drag strip may have different rules than the race track. Probably need a helmet too and I don't have one anymore. I should look into this. Might be kind of fun...although I'm sure three or four Xterras on the drag strip would get more than a few giggles.

I've got two helmets you can borrow. :D You should get that ViperX guy on Mercer Island to come. He's got a dual exhaust ya' know. ;)

There is an improvement, but I highly doubt it's 15%, even though Nissan is getting 180HP out of the 2003 model through some tuning and exhaust changes.

We did a lot of driving over the weekend from 5000 feet to 9000 feet, and I could barely pull away from a stock intake/exhaust Xterra, and he was an automatic and weighed more.

all the race track rules are based on how fast the vehicle goes. your not even required to wear a helmet unless you run below 12.99 and my buddies new dodge dakota r/t was running 14's

let me know when you go, i'll take you for a ride in my dragster. 11.26 @ 94mph.

Anxiously awaiting drag race results. I have the K&N filter in the stock airbox. Looking at purchasing the gibson exhaust shortly.

Why not just go do some dyno runs? That's the most sceintific way to see if you gained any power and only costs about $50 for 3-4 runs.

True, but drag racing sounds like alot more fun. :D

Maybe we could get everyone on the board who is interested to pitch-in for the dyno runs. I would be happy to contribute.

ChuckH,

Here are a couple of pics of a stock one.

I finally just read XOC's review on this charger. What the heck is that comment about the unit not being street legal? What's up with that? How is it any different from the FIPK mentioned?

The box says its for offroad use only!?!?!?! But I think only Kalifornia and CARB would not pass it as emission legal! All the connections are in place, so no reason its not street legal!

ChuckH
07-25-2002, 02:40 AM
Yeah, it's not smog approved for some reason, though nobody I've talked to can figure out why it wouldn't be. I just don't see how an air intake alone could have a significant impact on emmissions. Could be that K&N just hasn't pushed the paperwork through on them. ANyway, as long as they are not approved they have to be marked as offroad use only, though it really doen't mean anythign to those of us who wanted one. It's just so K&N can cover their ass and show that their product was clearly marked as such.

Well, I installed my aircharger over the weekend. All I can say is WOW!!

The difference in power is amazing. I'm also running the Calmini exhaust, but since it only hooks in post-cat-back, I don't think that has too much of an effect. I've noticed a difference both on accelerating and towing. My X doesn't struggle as much when I back my trailer up my driveway as I remember.

The noise will take some getting used to, but it is a lot better (not as bad) than the noise that came out of my Acura when I put a cold air intake on it. I dunno about mileage improvements, I keep standing on the accelerator...

When the new wears off and you can stop standing on the go pedal, check the mileage. I've been looking for ways to get the X up to about 20MPG.

I get 17-21 MPG

but I live in the flat, and hardly go above 50MPH

I have been getting 20 mpg ...but only when I keep the speed below 65!
