My 2000 windstar has ben running lean for about a year. This is acording to the codes that auto zone pulled up. Of course they wanted to sell me a oxy sensor but my gas milage never changed and the van seems to run fine. I have read a couple post where the problem could be the intake gaskets. I wish I would of read them a couple months ago when I had the plenum off to replace a steal coolent tube. Of cours being the cheap guy that I am and figuring that I was lucky just to get that far I quickly reassimbled the van.
Anyhow is it posabble to know if the oxy sensor is bad, can you test it some how?

How do I know for sure that the van is running lean could it be that the sensor for this is bad or is that what the oxy sensors do?

How do I even Know what oxy sensor it is.

How much damadge am I realy doing to the motor by running the thing lean?

Here is a link on O2 sensor testing: http://mr2.com/TEXT/O2_Sensor.html

Look for a vacuum hose off or leaking/cracked. WD40 sprayed in gasket areas will tell if the engine is sucking air through the gasket instead of the airfilter.

If you would like to read your own codes on a OBDII system check out this site: http://obddiagnostics.com/ I was planing on building the interface but bought the assembled one due to a lack of time. This code reader will also read O2 sensor responce.

Lean codes are 171 and 174. They are often incorrectly attributed to the 02 sensors. Your van is is one of the years to have this problem.

Search under Isolator bolts, port seals, TSB 03-16-1, or 171/174.

Try and get the exact error code numbers too.

If you think you need to do this TSB there is a lot of help and posts written on this topic in this forum

Some great information on the TSB that corrects the lean codes for your year....

If you check the link on OBDII codes....you will see that there are a lot of codes for specific failures with the oxygen sensors. As you do not have any of those codes.....I would guess that your sensors are good. You have 4 oxygen sensors. One is in front of each of the 2 catalytic converters (upstream oxygen sensors).....they monitor the exhaust and are used by the computer for fuel trim...and a lot of other things. The other 2 sensors are located, 1 after each of the catalytic converters (downsteam oxygen sensors). The downstream sensors monitor the catalytic converters...to make sure that they are working.
