92 Grand Prix 3.4 ???struggle 09-27-2005, 11:47 PM I am going to call on one tomorrow in the paper that states a problem and asking $900 it has a 3.4 L engine. What kind of problems are known on this model and engine? What kind of mileage can one expect out of it? I am an ASE master auto tech but have no prior experience with this motor or trans. I am looking for a better mileage vehicle for daily driving that I can fix to run but not dump tons of money into. I see how much you guys love these cars so what can one expect of this one for problems. No idea on the mileage. Will tomorrow on it. Chazman 09-28-2005, 10:46 AM I have a 92 with the 3.4L, and 200,000 km on it. The car has been great, no magor problems, but the alternator is in a very difficult place, but still managable. If it is a standard trans., look out they have a special clutch that most parts stores want about $1000.00 for. richtazz 09-28-2005, 11:34 AM The biggest problems with the 3.4 DOHC is head gaskets, timing belts(if they skip a tooth, your motor is toast) and general maintenance is a pain in the ass ( example: you have to remove the upper plenum to replace the rear plugs). I've never owned one, but they make good power when all is well, but with all the nightmare stories (having to drop the engine cradle to change an alternator being one), I'd pass. Chazman 09-28-2005, 06:06 PM Actually, you can change the rear plugs without removing the plenum. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
