I have a 2001 ford windstar with check engine light on, auto zone readout said oxygen sensor#2 on bank #2. which is bank #2? toward the front or the rear of the engine?

Do you have the raw code number? Did it actually indicate an O2 sensor or was it a lean or rich code - which is merely detected by the O2 sensors?

My 2000 Windstar did this, it had a leaking "O" ring seal, actually a specially designed gasket that was leaking in the Intake manifold, the parts was not expensive, but the labor might have been, had I not had a brother that was an expert mechanic with the proper tools - the manifold has to come apart for access to the leaking seal ...

There is a TSB for leaking intake manifold gaskets on the 1999 and newer windstar. Look over the link at the end of this post before replacing other parts......like oxygen sensors.

As DRW1000 is saying....there are LOTS of codes for the various types of failures that involve the oxygen sensors. While they do fail....it is not very often that an oxygen sensor fails.....even though auto part stores sell a lot of them. If it is giving you a "lean" code.....the most likely cause is a vaccum leak....and the computer is not able to correct the air / fuel mixture to compensate for it....so it is telling you of that....in which case...the oxygen sensor is good....and is doing it's job.

The link to some EXCELLENT information that someone posted for the TSB.... http://leckemby.net/windstar/windstar01.html

Also the fact that you only have a lean reading in one bank indicates that either the problem is just starting and will eventually cause the other side to rean lean too or we are dealing with something else.

Getting the codes numbers would be helpful
