Does anyone know if a catalytic converter is required for my 91 bonnevbille to run correctly? Is it needed to maintain prssure in the system or is it just there primatilu because government says it should be?

Im having somem issues and we think it may be because of a bad catalytic converter. Im not sure If I will have enough to replace it right now aand we didnt want to take it off if it was required to maintain system pressures in that area or not. Any help would be great thanks.

It will run without the cat but you may get a check engine light I am not certain if this model has one or two O2 sensors. If it has two then it will throw a light for catalytic convertor inefficiency. If you can live with the light then it should run OK. However, it is illegal in most areas to run without a cat. and if you have emissions testing in your area it will not pass. You can purchase another cat on the web to fit your car for less than $70 another $75 to have it installed and you should be good to go. It will probably cost you that much just to replace the convertor with a pipe.

A cat is used to reduce harmfull exhaust emissions. No harm will come to the engine nor will it affect the proper operation. Newer Bonnevilles actually have a second O2 sensor after the cat that verifies that there is one installed. There's ways around this too.

I've never known of anyone that has been approached by the EPA for cat removal but don't think it would be a pleasant experience. I'm not sure anyone would know that you didn't have one unless they looked under the car. Also, if your state has strict emissions testing and you are due for a new sticker, the car probably will not pass.

This car should have the OBD 1 system, with only one O2 sensor, so removing the cat will not affect the performance or throw a check engine light.
