Hi Guys,

I have a rather unique question that I was hoping someone might be able to help me with. I have a 1990 Olds. Cutless Supreme convertable that keeps blowing the 10 amp fuse that's connected to the fan relay.

This happened before a few months ago so I took it all apart, tested the leads with a mulit meter, and pulled off the fans and tested them remotely on another 12V source. After testing the relays and all the lines I couldn't find the issue so I put it all back together. Magically the problem went away. The primary fan turned on again at 228-230 and it didn't have a problem for about 3 months.

On the way home from work today the fuse blew again and I noticed the temp rising. Turning on the heater I was able to make it back home without overheating. I took everything apart agian and it didn't fix the problem this time. Help!

Any suggestions? I'm getting 12V key power to one side of the fuse. The other completes the connection showing 12V on the mulit meeter. The fans work remotely on 12V still and the fuse still blows regardless if the fans are connected, and/or the relays are plugged in. I even tried swaping the relays out. 10 blown fuses later I haven't gotten anywhere. I even managed to blow a 30 amp fuse thinking it might be an amperage spike for some reason. It sounds to me like a dead ground somewhere but I'm not even sure where to start. The wiring harness is clean and shows now signs of wear anywhere under the hood.

I'm tempted to pull the relays and "rewire" them to a remote 12V key power source so they always come on when the key is on (old hotrodding trick). I was hoping to look online for one last piece of advice before cutting into it.

The Haynes manual schematic I'm looking at shows a brown/white wire going from the fuse panel to the fan relay and they're on the 10 amp circuit. Check the wires at the relay back to the fuse panel. The wires at the relay on my '86 Ciera were in terrible shape with bad insulation.

Got any pics of that baby? 90 Cutty ragtops are very rare.

I think your idea of hotwiring the fans is a good idea. Assuming that you went over the harness thoroughly and can't find anything.
