Sounds like its getting a bad sensor signal, most likely from the 02 sensor. Theyre about 45 dollars and not too hard to replace, but it will take a bit of driving after replacing it for it to get back to running better.
In short, these sensors work by a kind of thermo-chemical reaction, creating a microvoltage sent to the computer. the tipoff was that it works fine when warmed up, in that if your O2 sensor has failed, it's not making the necessary adjustments to your fuel/air mix via the computer, and hence the trouble.
Good luck:)

Hi Guys ,
I have a travelcraft motorhome ( RV to you ) which is based on a 1988 ford econoline 6.8 litre diesel . I live in Britain where econoline knowledge is pretty thin on the ground .
The RV has this cold starting problem where it revs up uncontrolably and stalls about six seconds after starting . If it has been driven in the last six or so hours its OK .
Do i need one of these O2 sensors ?
Regards
Marcus
