Hey i just bought aftermarket spark plugs and wires... it was working great.. however, the aftermarket wires are lifting out of their chambers, which is obviously causing alot of trouble.. This is strange, although these are aftermarket wires, they're intended for my '94 altima.. does anyone have any suggestions? perhaps trim some of the rubber of the tip of the wires (a very small amount of course).. I CAN feel the wires slipping down over the tips of the plugs.. but i suppose its just not slipping down far enough to get FLUSH with them.. help please :eek7:

Same thing happened to one of my wires after changing plugs. Try pulling down on the part of the wire that connects to the plug while holding the cap part. Mine had slipped and made the connector too short to stay on the plug. If that's not the problem try crimping the connector a little - it might be too loose to stay on the plug. Can you feel a click or pop when you push it onto the plug?

There is nothing strange or unusual about your problem. Follow the proper procedure for replacing spark plugs. Remove spark plugs when the cylinder head is cold. Cold is defined as not running during the past eight hours. Put a small dab of never-seize on the threads of the new plugs. Use a torque wrench and tighten the plugs to 22 ft lbs. When the plugs are not tight enough, a very small amount of compression leaks past the threads and builds up pressure until the spark plug wire boot is blown out of the tube.

All right, i bought anti seize and lathered it on and then installed my aftermarket plugs/wires and the car was running BEAUTIFULLY for the entire gas pedal range... then something really bad happened! The motor sputters and sounds like its dying when i acclerate heavily... instead of accelerating, it sounds like its decelerrating and a plug is not firing at all(car is bucking, sputtering). This happened after running beautifully for a short car ride. I checked the spark wires... ALL were completely seated properly, nice and snug. I checked the distributor cap connections.. all were connected.. So then the car sat for a while, a couple hours, and then i popped the hood, "adjusted" all the wires, and then it ran beautifully again... What could be the problem here? These are brand new wires... the ONLY thing that just popped into my mind is if the wires have to be installed a certain DIRECTION on the distributor.. they're all in the proper holes(1,2,3,4 correct), but i just pushed them on whichever way, i didnt rotate them any particular way.. Please help!

By the way, when the problem was occurring, i could drive the car OK if i accelerated gently (not utilizing all four cylinders im guessing), but if i tried to acclerate hard, the sputtering and seizing up occurred.

The spark plugs and cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4. Cyl #1 is closest to the passenger side. On the distributor cap wire #1 is at the top on '94 and earlier. The distributor turns counter-clockwise. The fireing order is 1-3-4-2. From top to bottom the wires will be 1-3-4-2. 1995 and later #1 goes in the cap at 1:00, #3 @11:00, #4 @7:00.

I have a '94.. and yes, i had the sequencing correct.. i played with the plugs and now there seems to be no problems, except for a slightly rough idle, and slight hesitation on hard acceleration, but i supposed that is due to some oil in my #1 cylinder.. i have to replace the gasket under the valve cover for that, i'm pretty sure. Anyhow, thanks for the help.

AHH!! My car is dying again! something is up with those aftermarket plugs... i cant see anything wrong with the setup, and the car dies at low rpm (just as i take off from a stop) and staggers/sputters when i accelerate hard... The stock plugs dont give any trouble.... SIGH! Just goes to show you, not everything on ebay is legitimate.

I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the new sparkplugs. You have weak spark. Maybe there is low primary voltage to the ignition coil or the coil is bad, and the condition exsisted before you changed the parts. Maybe there is a secondary voltage problem between the coil and new wire caused by replacing the parts. Or maybe your problem is all a huge coincidence. If you are thinking it could only be a coincidence, buy a tow strap and a good pair of walking shoes. Don't leave home with out them! Check the spark at the end of a new sparkplug wire. The spark should be able jump a 1" gap. Repair manuals cost less than $14 from RockAuto.
