Getting Codes Read for Free

For all of us North of the 49th who wish we had Autozones so we could get our codes read for free:

Mister Transmission is advertising free code reads for the "Check Engine Light"

This surprises me since I did not think they did too much more than transmissions but I have heard the advertisments a few times and it certainly states the Check engine light.

As with any "free" service they are going to try and sell you something or get you to have them repair it. Just ask for the raw codes and post them on this board before commiting to any work or parts.

My local autozone has been a lifesaver. Not only have they read the codes, but one of the guys there is a Taurus (3.8l) owner and he's been able to do further diagnosis for me. He's saved me at least several hundred dollars. Can't say enough good about them.....

We also have used Auto Zone and they have even gone as far as putting a part on for me. Granted it was a small part but it was making my Winnie run pretty choppy (vacuum leak).
A commercial I keep hearing locally is Cottman Transmission is also doing a free 21 point inspection on all vehicles. They also mention the check engine light as well. So if you don't have an Auto Zone locally, maybe you have a Cottman Transmission.

My original point was that in Canada we do not have Autozones. (or Cottman) Many on this forum go to an Autozone to get their codes read. In Canada we never had a national chain that would perform this service without charging. In fact I purchased my own code reader because it paid for itself after about 3 reads.

Now Mr. Transmission (a Canadian Chain) is advertising that they will read the codes for free.
