trip odometer counts backwards

Does anyone know why my trip goes backwards on the expressway? It is fine in town, but seems when I get on the gas it stops turnning until, I get to speed and let off then it starts to count backwards. 92 estate

In all honesty, I wouldnt worry about it.
My roadmaster roleld backwards from 79,000 miles to 72,xxx (wereever it decided to stop).... (its at approx. 200k right now) It really doesnt effect it, so I've never botherd to replace it, as i will most likely be the last owner of this car, i'll just ride her till she goes up past the gates.. I havent seen anything of it getting worse, But Just keep an eye on the other gauges to make sure they dont do the same thing..

My 1992 Roadmaster Estate odometer also turns backwards at times. I have seen the main odo going one direction and the trip odo turning in the opposite direction! I bought another used cluster to install but wonder if the problem is something else.
