Bent ValveCREXSI 09-07-2005, 07:06 PM I was looking for anyone who could tell me how to remove the head of my 87 FI. I found out I have a bent valve and I want to fix it myself or send it somewere to get the head redone. Does anyone know how to take the head off and how to fix the valve. Need help Thanks. lxndr 09-07-2005, 07:58 PM 1. Buy a repair manual. 2. Buy a repair manual. 3. Buy a repair manual. 4. Set the motor at TDC! 5. Remove the distributor and plug wires from the cylinder head. 6. Remove the intake manifold from the cylinder head 7. Unplug the electrical connectors attached to the cylinder head. 8. Remove the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head. 9. Remove the valve cover. 10. Slip the timing belt off the cam gear. 11. Remove the cam and rocker arms. 12. Using a large breaker bar, remove the cylinder head bolts. 13. Remove the cylinder head. 14. Buy a repair manual to help you reinstall the cylinder head. How do you know you have a bent valve? Repairing the valve is not something you can do yourself. If you just replace the valve it will never seat properly. You will need to regrind the valve seat for the new valve. I would suggest that you have the whole head rebuilt or buy a rebuilt head from your local auto parts store, because with around 200,000 miles on the motor, the valve guide seals are probably bad (or about to go bad). The valve guide may also be damaged due to the bent valve, so if you're giong to all the effort of putting a "band-aid" on the cylinder head, you might as well put a little more effort into it and do it right. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
