On your engine, it is quite common that just the
starter contacts wear out. They are quite easy to
replace and WAY cheaper than a starter.
You will still have to remove the starter, but it is a very easy starter to remove.

I know this will probably sound stupid, but so far I haven't physically looked under the hood for the starter on my 98 Caravan....I read from another post that it is under the exhaust manifold. I have the 3.3 ltr. engine.....does the starter come out from under the van or can I get to it from the top-side. I unfortunately have recently ruptured two disks in lower back and am hoping/praying I don't have to crawl under the thing

It is where the transaxle and the engine join together and is in the front of the engine down below the exhaust manifold and above the front motor mount if I recall correctly. To me it would be a heck of a lot more work (if possible at all) to take it out from the top and you would be bending over so far it couldnt be good for your back anyway.

Before changing the starter, unhook the battery and remove and clean the wires that connect to the starter. It may just be a bad connection that is causing the trouble.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.....I just checked on a new starter and it was close to 130.00. Then saw on here that the "click" is a very common problem... Wish me luck :)

Money is always an issue around my house, if it were me I would clean the cable ends, and if that didnt fix it I would repair/replace the soleinoid as this seems to be a common problem after reading in this forum (the plunger kit) and I would have the starter tested at a parts store and see if you have a bad starter. If none of that fixes the problem then come back here and ask again because you probably have an electrical problem somewhere that is going to take a little more in depth troubleshooting.
