insuring and storing many carsanks106 09-07-2005, 01:27 PM I notice that some people have upwards of a dozen cars! I was wondering how you guys insure so many cars, and also.. where do you store so many? My driveway barely fits 4 cars.. i dont know where i would put that many. MagicRat 09-07-2005, 08:40 PM Several insurance companies offer super low rates on classic, antique or modified cars, often for only 5 to 20% of what regular insurance would be. The deal is that your use of these cars is strictly limited to car events, such as shows, tours, parades etc, and the occasional pleasure drive. This means NO errands of any kind, no driving to work, school, shopping etc. You MUST have at least one regular car with full insurance for such use, before you can qualify for this discount. This is fine for most of us, because we wouldn't want to use our precious cars for ordinary errands anyways. As for storage, it pays to be creative. Many farmers have extra room in barns available cheap. Often you can rent garage space form neighbours etc, who do not have a car, for about $1-2 a day, or so. '97ventureowner 09-07-2005, 11:30 PM I have a pickup that I use only during the good weather, (here in NY that's roughly 6 months :eek7: My insurance company has a plan where I pay the regular premiums while i use the truck, and then when I "take it off the road" for the winter, my premiums are roughly 25% for those months. I keep certain coverages, and I don't have to turn in the plates and re-register come Spring. To keep my costs down, I also have cut back on coverages that aren't needed after the vehicle reaches a certain age,i.e. collision. I also raised my deductables. Years ago, I used to have farm license plates for my truck that I used around the yard and neighborhood. These plates allowed the owner to go within a certain area, (roughly 25 miles) and go to places like the dump, other farms , etc. At that time, farm plates did not require insurance coverage. All that changed a few years back, and now you must have minimum state coverage, or a rider on your farm insurance policy. Andydg 09-09-2005, 07:44 PM My neighbors collect old Corvettes and during the winter they don't insure or drive them at all. I guess and this is what they told me is as long as they are parked inside they're second garage that their homeowners insurance covers anything that could happen to them. curtis73 09-09-2005, 08:50 PM I shopped around a good bit. I list my primary car at about 10k miles a year and give it full coverage with low deductibles. Then each additional car is so much cheaper. Right now in Los Angeles I'm paying about $1000 a year for four cars. Not bad. The fourth car only costs about $175. I also live in a building that used to be a mortuary. There are only five apartments, but about 35 parking spaces. Andydg 09-09-2005, 11:14 PM Right now in Los Angeles I'm paying about $1000 a year for four cars. Not bad.
