RPM drops to zero while driving

Here are the problems I am facing with......
1. When I drive, the RPM drops to zero (sometime on freeway some time driving through town) from time to time. I usually keep on pushing/pumping the gas pedal it usually comes back up and it runs fine again until next time it happens. Took it to the repairshop but could not find out what's wrong with it. It had lower fuel mileage so changed O2 sensor. Cleaned throttle body, idle air control passages, and decarboned the engine. Added fuel system cleaner. The problem still exists.

2. As other forum users wrote, I have a same problem with starting (cranks but won't start) from time to time. I usually wait 1min to 5 min and it usually restarts again.

3. Now the check engine soon light came on yesterday(I don't know if it's related to the previous 2 problems... The car runs but have high RPM(3000RPM when I only go 30 miles/hour).
Does any body have idea?

well, all the symptoms are describing a bad crankshaft position sensor. If it lights up your check engine light, the tachometer works when it wants to and has erratic behavior, all classic signs of a bad crank sensor.

Had similiar problem and found bad relay. There is a cluster bof 3 on the firewall, drivers side. Just swap locations and see if problem changes. Don't just leave them though if it runs. I bought compatable relay at electronics store but it failed again in 1 year. Automotive replacement was 25 dollars but has run great ever since.
