Theft System/Passlock

I have a '99 Malibu LS with 100k miles on it. I had bought a remote keyless entry a few month after I bought the car. For the past few month, the Anti-Theft light on the dashboard would stay on while driving and the only way to get it off is to restart the car. Now the car acts like it has an attitude where the theft system thinks it's been tampered with almost everytime I start the car. It did it four times while on the weekend. I usually have to wait 10 minutes before the light goes out. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I have talked to my mechanic and he said that the theft system may be on it's way out. I don't want to shell out a bunch of money because I know it's not cheap. Can I keep driving it until it finally locks up on me? What are my options? Please let me know as I will be making a move back to Texas from Virginia. I do not want to be stranded on the road just because my car doesn't want to start due to a theft system.

TIA - Seth :)

My 99 has been doing the same thing for years. It comes and goes. What someone told me is i will need to replace the ignition key lock assy.

Oh okay - will the car still start with this malfunction? I just want to get to Texas, then I'll worry about the car. :)

I have never had it cut out on me just not start and you have to wait like 10-15 min and start. When you start try to use a slow fluid motion with the key. That seems to help.
