After I changed my battery I noticed that my horn doesn't work. The horn fuse 15amp was blown. I changed it and tried the horn again and the fuse blew. There is a wire runing to the battery tray. When I changed my battery I cleaned up the tray and repainted it. reattached the small wire with a star washer. I wonder what this small wire is? Does any one else have this black wire coming from there fuse box running to the corner of the battery tray. I'm thinking its a ground wire and is not making a good ground. If it belongs to the horn I could understand why the fuse keeps popping.

Thanks

Could it be the horn relay? What does changing the battery have to do with any thing

Any help with this matter would be great.

This EXACT same thing happened to me when I put in a new battery on my 2002!! I replaced the horn fuse and it blew again instantly. I too would like an answer to this problem as the dealer wants $200 just to diagnose it. Please help!

RDJ: Couple of things. My Sub is a '98 and the schematics I'm looking at are out of the '98 service manual. Your '00 and the '02 maybe and probably are different. My Sub takes a 20a fuse for the horn curcuit, so look in your owners manual to make sure the right fuse is there. DO NOT put a larger amp fuse in the curcuit than what's stated in the owners manual!!! First of all, A blown fuse is caused by a DIRECT short to ground from the fuse, not a faulty or disconnected ground, which would cause the unit to not work somtimes or not at all. So, my '98 manual shows the fuse powers the horn relay through two lines. One goes to the relay "energize" line that is activated by a "ground" through the steering wheel horn switch or the remote door lock receiver. The other line goes direct to the horns when the relay is "energized" and then to ground.

I don't have a clue as to why changing the Batt would cause this in your '00 or the '02. I do not have the black wire you're talking about. However, if it's small and black it's normally a ground and by painting the area that it's connected to could cause problems, but I can't see where it would cause a blown fuse.

In the newer models there's a "BCM" (Body Control Module) that all kinds of stuff goes through, Lighting, etc.

Well, I'm rambling and It's CHRISTmas eve. Time to reflect on that.

Hope you have a Merry One............Steve

Thanks Steve

I checked my relay and it is clicking "energizing" when my horn is pressed in with out the fuse in it. This tells me that the fuse is in line after the relay. Now I will try to locate the horn and work from there.

Horns are behind the DRL/signal light housings. One left, one right.

Grasp the housing on the outside edge and pull carefully but firmly. They will "pop" loose. Go gently the wires are short in my case.

Both of my horns failed, and i got to do the cuss and swear thing to get them out. My 9 year old daughter (tom boy at heart) got tired of the new vocabulary she was learning, and helped with her little hands.

Replaced mine with after market 12volt horns, and no problems since.

Hope this helps...

ps...look close...they are back there...grin.
