HELP! stupid mechanic cant figure it out.EVOclipse 08-31-2005, 01:29 PM Ok so since all my head replacement and junk i had done, ive had the problem of my altenator belt coming off, every 2-3 weeks, the mechanic said he is stumped and wont replace it anymore. also now that ive had it back it pegs the rpms at 4k everytime i hit a light and clutch in. and sometimes it goes down to 2k idle but usually 2.2k , i have top brake and then clutch out slowly. whats wrong with my car....oh yeah and its making this Whirring type sound when its running. 96spyderman 08-31-2005, 02:26 PM For one... don't take it to anymore hoo dilly mechanix.... If you are really having trouble and no one here can help you out, just suck it up and take it to the dealership. They are trained to know our cars and have the right resources to find/fix any problems you might be having... I know they are going to be spendy but if you add up all the $$$ you have already spent on those mechanics you have paid... your car would probably be running properly for same price taking it to the dealership... just my :2cents MexRocket 08-31-2005, 02:31 PM is it a screeching noise? and do you have your heat shields on? sometimes you can fry your altenator, or you have an after market belt for your altenator... i have kinda the same problem i am getting heatshields to reduce the heat and im gettin OEM belt just incase.. EVOclipse 08-31-2005, 07:51 PM no the alt belt already came off on the way home from the mechanic. and no its not screeching anymore...other question is does the non turbo only have 1 serpinetine belt? cause thats what it looks like in my haynes manual...and the mechic was putting 2 belts on my car.... EVOclipse 08-31-2005, 07:53 PM oh yeah and the second mechanic i was taking it to is a very good mechanic and not to cheap. hes always swamped with business though SilvrEclipse 08-31-2005, 10:13 PM it should have 2 belts kjewer1 09-01-2005, 11:06 AM 3 belts actually. AC, alternator and water pump, and PS pump. This may sound a little too obvious, but has anyone checked out your crank pulley/harmonic damper yet? They are very prone to seperating at the damper material and will throw belts all day. If its not that, it can really only be poor alignment of the alternator to the crank. There was a TSB for most 2g turbo cars if not all of them to realign the accesories if this became a problem. With a belt on there, eyeball it and see if the alternator appears to be aligned with the crank pulley. If its not, its pretty easy to see the belt riding one side of the crank pulley groove, and the other side of the alternator pulley groove. Also, whdile the belt is off, check to see that you can turn the alternator pulley easily by hand, just it case it is or has seized up. EVOclipse 09-01-2005, 11:21 AM the waterpump is on the timing belt. and i was looking at the 2 pulleys, and the Altenator pulley totally looks futher out(1/8-1/4th of an inch) than the harmonic dampber/puley thinkg, as for the harm/pulley its brand new installed by the new mechanic. kjewer1 09-01-2005, 11:23 AM Shit, this must be one of those NTs :D Black97GST 09-01-2005, 10:26 PM The pulleys not being lined up could deffinantly cause the problem of the belt comming off. Your mechanic couldn't see that the pulleys weren't lined up??? wtf? Jack4161 09-03-2005, 12:23 PM The pulleys not being lined up could deffinantly cause the problem of the belt comming off. Your mechanic couldn't see that the pulleys weren't lined up??? wtf? You got that right. Probably that harmonic balancer that was just installed. Also you can put the alternator pulley on in reverse and it looks lined up to the eye but it will throw a belt as soon as you leave your driveway. It doesn't have to be out of allignment by very much. :2cents: EVOclipse 09-03-2005, 02:34 PM Cool guys...well i reinstalled another belt on it today and have drivin it about 10-20 miles and even on the highway not once did it screech or anything( i think i even forgot to lock the altenotor bolt. but now after seeing the belts and putting them on. IM BAFFELED how it can throw a belt off thats under another belt ( I HAD TO TAKE THE PS/AC belt off to put the altenator on....now thats some bullshit posessed car. lol anyways lets just pray that my belt installation was the right way.
