last night, after i had dropped my girlfriend off at her house, i was cruising down a nice 4 lane street with a few red lights in between. a pontiac grand am gt [the new ones, looked like an 04] pulls up to a light with me. the car has 5 kids in it, blasting whatever music they had blasting, my music was louder so i didnt hear exactly what it was. i do hear the car rev however, so i roll up both windows and close the sunroof. light goes green.... instantly jump a half a car ahead.... 2nd gear im still around 1/2 - 3/4 car lengths ahead, around the top of third, the grand am catches up and is about 3 or 4 feet behind my front bumper and i am like holy shit i cannot lose to this car that is loaded with punk asses. well luckily i got through the beginning of 3rd and i began pulling again to around 90 where we shut down. i was a little disappointed in my car that i couldnt pull more than a car length at most on a pontiac that was filled with 5 people. oh well..... thats what i get for having a stock car.

cliff notes
Scion tC > Pontiac Grand Am GT + 4 passengers.

Hey you still killed. Let the mods begin... (ie. give up your favorite thing to save enough money to make your car faster... LOL)

TheQuietThings

TRD supercharger coming soon.
i think thats about the only modding i am going to be doing besides building up my tranny a little bit. i still want to get decent gas mileage and have the car 10+ years without dumping a ton of money into it.

I will put you up against my Grand Am GT. I won't be loaded down. :icon16:

BTW....they had the same body style from 99 to 05.

Also, how did you hear it rev if your music was louder than theirs?? The Grand Am's are fairly quiet.

Did it look like this??

TheQuietThings
08-25-2005, 04:32 PM
yea it looked something like that
maybe the music was louder, but my music was loud enough so that I couldn't tell what music he had on.
and yea.... revving an engine to 6k isn't hard to not hear. sorry if you don't believe me or whatever.

Mr. Luos
08-25-2005, 05:58 PM
Not saying I don't believe you.

BTW...the Grand Am's can't rev to 6000 in neutral. Computer won't allow it. Acts like a rev limiter. Has to be in gear to get over 4000.

good race....what do grand am GT's have for horsepower and such? are the ones with ram air any fast?

I believe they have about 185 hp stock and run High 15's/Low 16's if you launch it well.

TheQuietThings
08-26-2005, 04:56 AM
175hp and 205lbs/ft. [grand am gt]

i hope they run better than a low 16, since the tC runs a 15.7 with 163HP

the GA weighs a decent bit more than the TC and has to deal with a little more drivetrain loss.

The best I have heard of the Grand Am GT's running stock is 15.4. And that is the best one. Slow car really. Works for my daily driver nicely though.

A buddy of ine drives an automatic (not sure if they even come in standard shift) and supposedly ran a 15.1 @ 92 with a 2.2 60.. They must come alive up top, my old car ran a 15.5 @ 92 with a 2.3 60.. 4 people would weigh it down a good bit though, good kill

I don't buy the et either without a better 60, a 2.2 wouldn't cut it on a stocker.

I question everything. 92 MPH is WAY too fast for the stock Grand Am to trap.

The advantage of the Grand Am GT is that it still hauls nicely with the weight of passengers thanks to all that torque. However, like the Scion, it was not intended to be a high performance race car. Like Mr. Luos said, they make excellent daily drivers with a nice ride, great handling, good fuel economy (with regular octane) on par with many 4 cylinder cars out there, lots of options, a great stock stereo system, smooth transmission, easy to drive in all driving conditions...and they will take care of most boy racers in their 4 banger compacts who want to try to take them on in the lame duck lane from a red light. Even when the large trunk is loaded up with luggage for the family of 4 that are riding in it on their long weekend trip (though in that case, maybe not a Scion tC).

Then again, the car looks so good inside and out, it doesn't need to be fast...it only needs to be fast enough.

It is the Grand Prix GTP that has a stock eaton supercharger.

Ive heard that GrandAms with a supercharger and V6 are not to shabby either.

210 lb. ft. of torque is about all they're good for stock, then you need to build the tranny up. Keep everything stock, the transmission will last forever (or until you start doing neutral drops). ;)

In retrospect, what's funny about the original post here is that the Scion driver actually thinks his 4 banger economy car is some fast street rod. My guess is this is due to the fact that up until he got his Scion, he hasn't driven anything faster than a 10 speed bike.

With GTO's, Mustang GT's, SRT-4's, and now V8 powered Impala SS's and Monte Carlo SS's on the street and quite affordable to the average joe, I think most of us would have too much self-respect to brag about illegal street racing in a 4 banger economy grocery-getter.

so a guy walks in to a lexus dealership and wants to buy a car, so the dealer comes up to him and says "may I help you with something" the customer replies "why yes Im looking for something with great handling, good on fuel (with regular octane), lots of options, a great stock sound system, a smooth transmission, easy to drive in all driving conditions, and last but not least SOMETHING WITH A LARGE TRUNK!!!!!!!!!!! The dealer replies back "I have a brand new 2006 GS 400 it has everything that your looking for but...................A LARGE TRUNK............Im sorry sir but you might want to try out the pontiac dealership down the road I heard the grand ams have a monster trunk............... :naughty:

Actually, I was more interested in having a car with the legendary 3400/hydramatic combo tricked out with the ram air intake and performance axle. Those 3400's and hydramatics last forever and are as dependable as engines and transmissions get. Good looks, dependable, economical, excellent ride and handling, good size, oodles of features, moves pretty good...what's there not to like? Oh, I forgot. It's made by GM and you gotta hate everything GM makes in order to fit in with the "In" crowd these days. :D

He said he was racing a Grand Am GT with 5 kids in it in the street and wonders why he couldn't pull more than half a car length on it. He did this on a public street, and admitted that he got up to 90 MPH. Not to many 4 lane roads with controlled intersections and that kind of speed limit. Nobody drives their car to highly illegal speeds on public roads thinking, "holy shit i cannot lose to this car that is loaded with punk asses" if they DON'T think their car is fast.

I think that just about explains it all. :grinno:

For the record, I don't laugh at people driving a Neon, I feel sorry for them. It's something called empathy. After spending my fair share of time behind the wheel of a Neon, I know what it's like. I would never laugh at someone less fortunate than I. Unless you have short legs and long arms to fit with the Neon's ergonomics (or the lack thereof) and don't care a thing for refinement or style, it's really not the kind of car you'd want to be driving every day year after year.

Still, if all I could afford is a Scion tC and dreamed about being a boy racer on the streets beating Grand Am GT's left and right to the next intersection, I think the SRT-4 would be a better choice. It wouldn't be so difficult to beat a refined family sedan then.

The Camry, Altima, and Accord are also good cars, in the same class as the Grand Am GT, and were cars I also considered when replacing my lowly neon. I also accept that there are cars that are better, like the Maxima, Grand Prix GTP, Monte Carlo SS...and even cars better than them as you get into the realm of Cadillac, Lexus, etc. People like different cars for different reasons. Clearly, the only thing that matters to you is going from 0-60 as fast and cheap as possible. Since I don't live anywhere near a track and street racing is illegal, I looked for more in a car. That's all.

nahhhhh....not really.....I think you got it twisted ....I didnt buy the car just for the 0-60 or to street race it......I bought it cause I love neons dispite what you think of them......I also had a 95 sohc that was clocking 14.5 on just a few bolt ons and weight reduction plus it was an excellent all around car to me.......for a penelty box...I was proud of..I bought the SRT-4 ACR for the love of this sport, tuning, modifying, and at the end... if there is an end... having accomplished something.....not to street race....just a quick question why are you in the STREET RACING forum.......sounds to me like you should be in the GENERAL CAR forums or something.....
