Fuel Pump gone Bad?

My 127,000 mile 98 Windstar is sitting at a shop being looked at. They are saying they believe the fuel pump has failed. I am real suspisous of this. Particularly cause they say its not winding at all when I have heard it winding. I also filled up a 16 oz bottle of fuel in a couple of seconds. They state fuel preesure issue vs. volume? I was driving down the road and it bogged to a stall as i accellarated. If the van sat for 20 minutes to half hour I could get it running for a minutes then bogged to a stall and wouldnt restart. Well its sitting there at mechanic cause i finally through my hands into the air. I have replaced a lot on the van. Was chasing a lean bank 1 condition for months still havent found it. I ve replaced wires, coil pack, IAC, clean egr ports, wiped MAF and Air Cleaner area, PCV, replaced plenum/intake gaskets, filters air & fuel etc. Ok, I hope there not just fixing the most expensive thing, I worry about other parts like pressure reg, and canister purge solenoid (got a P1450 2x in last 6 months),. Help, I m I just being paronoid or should I let them replace the pump. This is one part that I would have a hard time getting to from jacking up the van. Wheres the Purge Canister and Solenoid at? VM

Dogging out during acceleration? Yeah, it does actually sound like a fuel delivery issue. I changed my fuel pump ($120) and fuel level sending unit ($25) while trying to fix a hesitation issue. I did it in my garage in two weekday evenings. It was very easy. Labor shouldn't be much for this. The problem was fixed, however, I suspect that the harness plug right next to the tank was ultimately the problem. I bent all the posts a bit so better contact was made, and (low and behold) the fuel gauge started working. Any dash lights or codes?

well got the fuel pump done. that was definetly the problem. However I still get a skip under load (when fans kick on, A/C kicks around) etc. I wish I could solve this. Before reseting the CEL I had Po171 and P0303. I dont believe the garage reset/cleared these cauae light was on when i left garage. I am still qurious if Oxygen sensors can cause drivibility issues. Could it be signaling the PCM faulse numbers and the PCM in turn tries to make up for the loss of fuel or increase of air (Po171 lean bank 1). I noticed when I am coasting the RPMs will suddenly drop 500 or so RPM's then pick back up where left off. It makes me nurvous. VM

I didnt have fuse issues. However as a suggestion I would not keep replacing fuses. You could have a fire if there is a short in your pump. I had someone replace my pump and it cost 400 dollars parts and labor combined. If your vehical staulls when accell its prob fuel pump. I was getting a good volume of fuel to engine, lack of pressure was my issue. Let me know if theres anything else I can help with. If you know anything that could help me with a misfire issue let me know. #2 misfire was intermidate but more often now.

If they did not clear the codes, it will take a certain number of "drive cycles" for the codes to clear after the cause has been corrected.
Sometimes people correct the problem, and don't know it, because the Check Engine light is still on.
But it will not go off on it's own until the car has been problem free for a certain number of cycles.

I would NOT suspect an oxygen sensor at this time.
There are a lot of codes for oxygen sensors...for a number of problems that can come up with them.
If you do not have a code that specifically says it is an oxygen sensor, then they are most likely good.
They are not a high failure item on the windstar.
Clogged EGR ports (usually misfire on cylinders 1, and/or 4), dirty fuel injector(s), vaccum leaks (the most common problem) and ignition issues (spark plugs, wires, coil packs) which, if original (for others as you stated that you replaced yours), will be showing their age.

Canistor purge solonoid......that gets it's vaccum from the PCV line...(as do a number of things)....I would check the vaccum line(s) and connectors that go from the PCV valve to the upper intake manifold..... Look for cracks or collapsed lines.

What I have replaced over the past severl months chasing a lean condition (P0171) and intermidant mis-fire usually cyl #2:

Plugs and wires
Pcv
IAC cleaned then later replaced
Intake gaskets/clean EGR ports/injectors (cleaned)
MAF cleaned
Fuel Pump,sender
Normal filters
Coil Pack

I will look at the lines again for a vaccum leak. Keep in touch. VM
