Torque Convert Problem?

I have a '99 Suburban 1500. About a week ago my wife informed me that when she left the store she put it in reverse and it would not move, she put back in park and tried again and it was okay. I checked it out and everything seemed fine, I figured she just thought she had reverse and had it in nutrual instead. Later that day it started making an very loud humming type noise. I ran through four wheel high and low, backing it up and pulling forward and the noise seemed to have stopped. The other day it really went bad on me. As I was going down the road it started the humming noise again, when I stopped and took off, it changed to a vary loud gringing-clattering noise, sounded like something was hitting the flywheel and it also lost almost all pulling power. When placed into drive or reverse you can feel the trans take the power and pull slightly as normal The noise is very quite at an idle in park and when placed into gear (you almost don't even notice it) until you get to about 10 MPH then you can hear it a mile away. The Trans fluid is full and clean, shows no signs of burning or metal in it and I can see nothing wrong in the bellhousing area through the inspection port. Anyone have this problem before or any ideas as to what I should check out before I spend a ton and have it torn all apart.

Is this a 4 wheel drive or only 2?

Ok there was a problem with the shift lever (transfer case) in some models. I do not know when they corrected it. I do know that the original levers had plastic inserts that would wear out and cause the transfer case to slip in and out of gear. Try engaging the 4 wheel when this occurs and see if it makes a difference or makes unusual noise. I waited to long to find out about this and ended up rebuilding the entire gear box replacing the fork and a couple of gears. Only cost about 300 dollars (only dealer parts) and a days work dropping it and rebuilding and reinstalling.

Oh by the way if it does not want to stay engaged in 4 wheel then this is probably the problem.

The Reaction Shell Is Broken Inside Trans. Verry Common Issue With 4l60e. Any Time You Have No Reverse On A 4l60e $$$$. The Trans Will Have To Be Taken Out And Rebuild With New Converter. Should Run About 1300-1500.00 For 4x4 Version.

Okay, Just crawled out from under it and found all the noise is coming from the transfer case. I have all gears, forward and reverse, she seems to go into four wheel Hi and Low, but the transfer case is sounds like it is jambing gears and coming apart in all gears and drive selections. This is a push button 4 wheel, no manual shift lever. Rebuild time I guess.
