Hi! I have a 1993 Honda Accord EX, and my transmission's been dying for about a year now. It finally decided to up and die two days ago, and now I'm looking at buying a replacement transmission.

Can anyone recommend me ideas on how to get the best buy on a used/rebuilt transmission? I've called around the area and everyone wants to charge me about $3000 to rebuild my current transmission, which is way more money than we can afford.

I've checked:
http://www.lkqap.com
and
http://www.acceltransmissions.com

Quotes so far (including shipping) are:
$550 for a 98k used transmission
$600 for a 79k used transmission
$795 for a 30k used transmission
$1095 for a rebuilt transmission

I've called around the area, and have had quotes from $240 to $450 for labor. Is there anything I should be asking, or maybe other places I should be looking for a used transmission? Money's really tight for us right about now. The money we'll use to pay for it will be coming to us on a loan, so I want to be as sure as possible that we'll spend it properly. Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

P.S. In case you were wondering, our current transmission has black fluid in it, and when you shift the car bucks about wildly. It's really unsafe

Well, it looks like you've done your homework. I would say any of the ones you listed would do - how much more mileage do you expect to get out of the car? With normal driving & good maintenance the tranny lasts a long time, so even the 98k one might do what you want.

You could always try a good local junkyard. If they are they kind that dismantles and cleans parts, they'll be a little more expensive than ripping it out yourself. But they'll usually get one for you if they don'tr have one (so you may well save on shipping).

After 3 months, I doubt he's still driving on the same transmission, Jon02Accord.
