Power Door Lock and Mirror Problem

I have a 2000 Malibu that has a problem with the front driver side door lock. It unlocks with the switch but refuses to lock with the switch. The switch locks every door but the driver's. It just makes a weird buzzing noise when you hit the switch. Also the power mirror switch fails to move the mirror to the left. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds to me like a burnt-out motor.

Being that it works in one direction but not the other, it's probably an alignement/gearing issue. The buzzing noise that you hear is the motor.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and apologize if I am not using the proper procedure for posting a message. I'm hoping you can help me. Ive just bought a 2000 malibu with 122,000 miles on it. The car runs great except for the fact that the ignition key will not open any of the manual door locks on the car, but will work in the trunk lock. Basically, if I lock all the doors I would not be able to get in the car. Also, the gearshift knob feels loose when shifting as if it is about to come off. Can the knob be tighten or replaced, and what if anything can I do about the lock problem.

Sounds like your door locks were changed (car accident maybe) and they didn’t set the tumblers for the existing key. I’d remove the lock bring it to a locksmith and have them set the tumblers to your ignition key. I don’t know what the cost of a new lock is but that may save you some headaches. I would only do the driver side. I rarely use my key; I always use the FOB, but you do need a way in the car if your battery dies on you.

My shifter has a bit of rocking motion also but it’s never been a big deal for me and I’m not totally sure that tightening a screw would fix it. If you look on the back of the shifter there should be a cosmetic piece of plastic that would pop out and reveal the screw

the gear shift knob is held on with a U clip, take a small screwdrive and pry it out and the knob lifts off. $30 at the dealer and a new black gear shift knob without the long tail (the exact replacement is not available) I found one at a junk yard (lucky me) also the lumina has a knob thit the push button on the top or I believe a Ford Thunderbird has one that may fit it has an overdrive button on the side that you don't need. My handle was broke and I had to play with it to shift out of park now the only problem is turning the cer off I have to wiggle the shifter fo the key release works (sometimes) hope this info helps.
