I need some information on replacing a transmission in a 2001 windstar.

You're covering a lot of territory here. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? My tranny gave out back in May on my '99. It was close to a hundred miles from home so opted to have the garage that towed me do the work. Cost $1075 for a rebuilt tranny and $300 to install (before taxes). It has been doing fine and I don't regret having it done. I would have done it myself had I more time and if it had happened closer to home. The tranny went out do to overloading it and not keeping a closer eye on it. If there's something speciffc you're needing just punch it in and someone will likely answer the call. Much luck.

I was wanting to know how big of a job it is. I know on some of them you have to remove the entire engine cradle (the whole frame section). Is this one of those jobs. If it can come out with out removing the engine cradle can you tell me how.
Thank you
Steve

I didn't watch them replace mine, but I did ask the mech just how invloved it was. He said it's not that bad. They have some kind of bar that hold the engine in place, supposedly it goes across the fenders and is chained to the engine. They then undo the subframe. After that they disconnect the tranny and remove it and the torque converter all in one operation. Doesn't sound to terrible, but then, as I said, I wasn't present when they did it. I would think a person could use a "cherry picker" to hold the engine in stead of this bar thing. Maybe someone has done the deed in person on here and will shed some light on the situation.
