Hi everybody, Big Nathan. Had my first major tune up performed on my 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 6cyn, 4.0 liter. The service manager told me that I should be aware that my ignition coil, although working OK for now; shows signs of swelling. Due he said to having become oil fouled. When I asked want I could begin to expect, was told I may begin to have problems starting and or rough idling. My question to anybody who can assist is, where is the ignition coil located, and as I was told is it really immersed in oil? Has anybody experienced or familier with this kind of problem? Is it something I can do to correct, or do I have to return it to the dealer to be addressed? How long really should I expect to go on before this becomes a real problem? Also he something about the shift cable detent? Something about it being a recall yet, they did not have the parts on had to correct. I should not be able to move shifter unless my foot is on the brake. OK how much of this is really a problem?

hey Big Nathan

The coil is filled with oil to help keep it cool. Kinda like the transformers on the power poles (used to use the PCB oil). Sometimes the oil breaks down and the coil overheats then doesn't spark the way it should. You can change it your self and get it from a parts store other than the dealer if you want.

To find where it is located, follow the center wire from the distributer cap to the other end - there's your coil.

I don't think it is something to worry over, just think of it as one possible cause if you notice the symptoms he mentioned.

You really should have the shift cable detent recall done. Its free and will make sure that passengers can't accidently knock the vehicle out of park. Just make the appointment so they can order the parts before you come in.

Big Nathan,

When I first read about the recall about a year and a half, saying if you leave the engine running with tranny in PARK that it could slip ot of park into reverse, I thought "yea right, like that could happen" well none the less it started doing it (this was about 2-3 months ago) I immediately went to the dealership and had the recall done. When they got done with the recall they explained to me that it took up all the slack in my cable and that now it would need to be adjusted, because it wasn't going into PARK at all and wanted to charge me $72 to adjust the cable.

Beware of this when you go for your recall. They should have known that this adjustment would have to be made and it should be part of the recall. Don't take any B.S. from them about it, make them do the adjustment for free as part of the RECALL.
