FMEM caused by bad MAP sensor?

Out of the blue today the check engine light came on, ('92 e-150, 351 W, e4OD trans, w/ EEC-IV computer) and the trans began to shift rough (bang) into each gear, the idle began to surge and it seems to idle high at stops.
Using my old SunPro codescanner gave the following codes:

Key On Engine Off Test: MAP Sensor

Key On Engine Running Test: Engine control system operating in Failure Mode and Effects Management programming stratagy & MAP Sensor,
(two codes).

Can the MAP sensor cause the engine control system to operate in FMEM?
Can the Map Sensor and/or the FMEM cause the symptoms listed above?

Kind regards and thanks!

Just wanted to reply for those interested...

It was not the MAP sensor that caused all the problems, but rather the MAP sensor vacuum hose where it connects to the manifold fell apart, causing the sensor to not have any signal.

I wanted to take a min to thank the posters and those who reply to these posts for spreading their knowledge. I've been lurking in this forum for quite some time now and it's helped me out on numerous occasions.

Thanks!
