Ok i got a 2 mustang driving friends...one has an 04 gt 5spd the other a 90 gt 5spd 5.0... Both have been stang owners for like the past 10 years..

WHENEVER i tell them i like camaro's...and we discuss drag racing..they always say mustangs get the jump and the camaro catches up in like 3rd.. This is stock for stock also.. LT1's and LS1's make more torque then a 4.6 or even a 5.0...how would a mustang get a better jump if it's not as powerfull..? I know 94 to 01 camaros weigh like 200lbs more then stangs, but i see that as a benefit when you launch cause of the weight on the back tires.

BTW, they do agree that on the highway a camaro would blow by them easily, especially like 130mph over. But still, i think if i got a 96 LT1 or a 98 LS1 manual, and put it up to a stock 04gt and 90 gt...i'd get atleast one car on launch and one car at the end of the 1/4...

It's not a who would win post...

It's not like i'm saying "who would win, an 05 charger or a 90 crx"....duh...

What would "technically get a better launch"..??

Thanks for you sincere concern though, what a gal..

Maybe the Mustangs can usually get a better launch on stock tires due to the fact that the Camaro might be over-powering the rear tires causing it to have some traction issues. Thus causing the Camaro to play catch-up. If both cars were equiped with a set of slicks the Camaro would easily out launch the stangs in question.

Don't worry about cassie, solaris. It's that time of the month again...

the Mustang could also have shorter gears.

4th Gen Camaro's are hard to launch... lots of axle hop and terrible traction with stock setup.

Never had a 'stang get a jump on me. Of course, never really had a chance to race any. Most avoid me, and I rarely see Cobra's out. The couple of times I have, either it was a V6, or he wasn't on the loud pedal all the way. Either way, I wasn't WOT either.
Gearing plays a role, tires play a role, driver plays a role. Mustang's can handle stickier tires from the factory than the Camaro can as well.

I will beat you, and beat you bad. Who cares what I am driving or how I feel?

What's wrong with mustangs?

OK, having owned a 98 Cobra I can easily answer this question. First off, LS1 F Bodies suck for launch. Their rear suspension is a joke. PERIOD....... Matt found that out firsthand when he went to the track. Even w/ LCA's, Panhard Rod, and other essential goodies, an M6 powereed F body is a boon to launch. I use to be able to get a better launch against my buddies LS1 Z28, but then he'd just flat out walk my old Cobra. It's especially bad if you go against a Mach 1, as they are geared primarily to take off well (Suspension and rear end are unbelieveable). LS1's do really well because they have alot more power then the 4.6. Even Mach 1's see about 15-20 less wheel horsepower than an 01-02 LS1.

Classic....

And thanks for the info, 2000LS1Z28. I always wondered why a Mach 1 will run nearly identical 1/4 mile times as a Cobra, I guess that IRS in the Cobra doesn't help with launches....do Mach 1's have a live axle?

do Mach 1's have a live axle?

yes, all mustangs do basically, except the 03/04 cobra. the new 07 cobras will have a live axle too, but its ok because it launches better, and it actually handles really well with the new set-up on it.
