k so from what i have heard this is a pretty simple operation. already i have space issues with the guard around the fan but i think i hae enough space to do the job and avoid taking it off. anyways i have already bought the serpentine belt for bout $30...plan to save that other $30 by installing it myself...the diagram inside the hood shows what pulley needs to be moved to release the tension and i was told to do this using a rachet while someone else changes the belt, since there is a spring that will cause it to return to is operating position.

the problem i am faced with is finding the exact size socket for the job. none seem to fit. also once i get it to fit. do i simply turn the rachet counter clockwise to release teh tension. plz let me knwo what size socket to use for a 01 grand cherokee laredo...6 cyl. 4.0 L

On my 96 5.2L this job is definitly a knuckle scratcher - and an arm burner if the engine is hot.

The fan is not a factor in this except to get in the way. The belt went around the pulleys without going over the fan.

The socket needed for mine was an 18mm. I used a ratchet with a pipe extension and slid the extension to hold the released position while I changed the belt.

Besure to check the idler and tensioner pully bearings while the belt is off. They should not sound dry and rattle...

I have to tell you I went and bought the $80 tool from sears and had it done in a half hour, and I replace the ideler at the same time, and I never skined anything, the tool was well worth it.

The size I think was a metric 11
