Noise when TurningNorthern Jeep 08-17-2005, 11:19 AM Hello Folks New user here and I think this site is amazing and vey informative. I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited full time 4WD. When I turn going slow there is a major(and embarrassing snapping/clunkinbg noise from the front end). The local garage removed the front drive shaft and the noise is gone,.but from what I've read, it probably is not the shaft but the VC in the transfer case. With the front shaft out, the Jeep rolls down the driveway( slowly overnight) even in park and is it OK to drive the Jeep with this shaft removed.( Front CV axles are new) Also, exhaust maifold cracked near the flange where the front pipe is attached, is it diffucult to remove the exh manifold for a weld job on it.Do I have to fully remove the intake or can it just be pulled back a bit and remain on the vehicle. Thanks in advance for your help here, this site is truly a wealth of information. dksob81 08-17-2005, 05:33 PM a bad VC, you would experience hopping/biding when turning. The CLANKING/CLUNKING noise you described are of a bad VC joint, but those were replaced....humm. As for the front driveshaft removal, this is the cause of you rolling while parked. I don't think it will hurt anything to leave it off, well of course unless it rolls into another vehicle...lol, Many people ahve removed the driveshaft and lef tit off during the summer, mostly because of a bad VC. The VC could be your cause of the CLUNKING when turning. Do you experience any hopping/binding when turning? Thank for the response, I do get hoping and binding when turning going slow, but that has stopped now that the front driveshaft is removed. It seems like you really know these vehicles. so can you help me on my exhaust question below Also, exhaust maifold cracked near the flange where the front pipe is attached, is it diffucult to remove the exh manifold for a weld job on it.Do I have to fully remove the intake or can it just be pulled back a bit and remain on the vehicle. dksob81 08-18-2005, 08:13 AM I would remove the whole exhaust manifold, disconnected it from the head and the downpipe. I have a friend who just used something to fix a whole in his exhuast manifold (Eclipse GST) and it worked real good. I will find out what it was called and let you know. Remind me, I may forget about it. As for the hopping/binding and the clanking noise, you deffinately have a bad Viscous Coupling.
