95 4Runner Rumbling transmission

I've noticed a rumbling sound while driving at high speeds. At first it was around 70 mph, only while NOT accelerating or braking, just coasting. Say you let off the gas and let it coast around 70 a loud rumbling occurs - at first I thought it was the tires, but thought otherwise when the rumbling didn't occur at all times.

Now the rumbling occurs around 50 and 55 mph. I've noticed that it has to be 2k rpm at 50mph or 2.5k rpm at 55mph for the rumbling to occur. Sometimes the rumbling will occur under 50mph but rarely.

Every time it is while coasting - no gas, no braking.

Any ideas?

My 94 does this as well. If someone knows what this is, please inform! Is this a sign of a dying tranny?

Check the drive shaft u-joints and slip joint. The drv shft is hollow and transmits sounds, making you think it's the tranny.

Is your antilock light coming on yet?
My 95 does it, I replaced the u-joints then I reoplaced the whole drive shaft. I am almost sure it's coming from a bad toruqe converter.

This vibration in these years is probably the transfercase output shaft yoke nut, big hurkin thing you need to take the U joint off to tighten.
DO IT SOON! The vibration is pounding out the bearing and wearing the splines of the output shaft.
Easy cheap fix!
Good Luck (repost and let us know)

I have had this rumbling also. Today I put into 4wd to drive in th snow, and it seems like it is engaging and disengaging, unable to drive smoothly. could this be the problem?
