"Growling" noise from right frontbiv343 08-15-2005, 11:38 AM First, I did some searches and I think I have an idea what this noise is, but wanted a second opinion. The best thing I can think of to describe the noise is the same type of noise you would hear in a 4x4 truck with "mud bogger" tires on it - kind of a low hum that increases with speed. It appears to only be coming from the right front wheel. I checked the tire and didn't notice any bulges, shifted belts, etc. I saw in some other posts that people would notice the noise going away when turning certain directions - I seem to notice the noise whether turning or going straight. It appears around 15MPH, and is still audible at 70MPH, although the wind noise drowns it out. My first guess is the infamous wheel/hub bearing issue. The car has just over 86000 miles on it. Any input is appreciated. GTP Dad 08-15-2005, 12:45 PM Your guess is correct, the wheel bearing needs to be replaced. The growling you hear is the bearing and if it continues or gets louder it could leave you stranded by the roadside. Get it changed soon! biv343 08-18-2005, 12:59 PM Got it replaced and all is well now. Just think, I might get to repeat this fun experience on the left side in the near future.... Ridenour 08-18-2005, 04:00 PM Don't worry about it. I had to change all 4 after I rolled my car. It's a good learning experience, and after that, just think... you'll be a pro at changing hub-assemblies on Aleros! :) wifesalero 08-26-2005, 12:38 PM Are the wheel bearings something that can be done at home? I have all the hand tools I should need and some 2 and 3 jaw pullers. Are there any special pullers or tools required? GTP Dad 08-26-2005, 04:08 PM Wheel bearings can be done at home. The biggest issue is that you need to make sure that you need to be sure that the axle nuts are properly torqued to specification. Also make sure that the car is properly supported while you are working on it. Use jack stands or block it up. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
