first race in my new car eclipse gsxYOUNGSTER 05-01-2002, 12:27 PM ok its saturday im cruising down a notorious street for raceing when a 91 civic pulls up next to me and revs so there it goes the light turns green and were off it was like he didnt even take off. later i pull up next to some older car like a regal or something ( not grand national)there was no revs than he all of a sudden just takes off and go it takes me a while but i pass him after a couple of seconds. than this last race doesnt make sense but look at my other post after you read this well we were rollling about 30mph and i hear a noise and blue 99 civic si with i/h/e i look at him and he takes off so there i go catch up to him right away and pass him and yes we were racing cause he yelled out good race so tell me what you think i have an exhause that came with it its like 2 inch and i added an intake pretty good for my first day having it kidrocket 05-01-2002, 12:34 PM why doesnt that make sense? Eclipse GSX.. isn't that just a GS with a cosmetics package? Or do you mean a GS-T (older) or GT (current-model low-performance v6)? Honestly, a civic SI (electric blue 99 civic = SI) could solidly beat a GS, come close to a GS-T after some fairly easy bolt-ons (like i/h/e), and be almost dead-even with a GT Eclipse. Sorry to break the news to people, but Eclipses really aren't very fast. The GS-T was the only hope they had, and it wasn't worth much. I've worked on and driven a GS-T quite a bit (my ex-girlfriend's car), and it loses to my 'teg GS-R with intake and proper tuning. Granted, by less than half-a-carlength, but still loses. :) kidrocket 05-01-2002, 03:40 PM no a GSX is AWD turbo and they haul ass believe me if it was a GS with an appearance package, i wouldnt waste the gas Self 05-02-2002, 06:33 AM Originally posted by kidrocket no a GSX is AWD turbo and they haul ass believe me if it was a GS with an appearance package, i wouldnt waste the gas Eclipse RS = TRASH Eclipse GS = TRASH Eclipse GS-T = Turbocharged and a 14.9 second quarter mile Eclipse GS-X = AWD and Turbocharged and a 14.7 second quarter mile It'd be hard for him to lose to an SI rendog24 05-02-2002, 08:43 PM you got a turbo charged awd and you lost to a civic si. whats wrong with you. jOYRiDe 05-03-2002, 03:06 AM Originally posted by rendog24 you got a turbo charged awd and you lost to a civic si. whats wrong with you. hahahaha only one answer for that emadboy200 05-03-2002, 06:24 PM Lets see some pics of your eclipse, and its engine. whprelude 05-05-2002, 12:05 AM you should add more periods commas stuff like that because your post sounds too wierd to me not to mention it doesn't make sense so use a bunch more periods commas so your posts won't look stuipid like mine right now i am not using periods commas to show you how stupid it sounds when you read it to yourself by the way good kills sorry i have been drinking a little bit why are you not in the mitshubishi forum:flipa: rendog24 05-05-2002, 01:01 AM i noticed u were slurring in your writing.:D j/k:) YOUNGSTER 05-06-2002, 12:12 AM well i have bad news my gsx i automatic and i got a sorry launch later that day i raced my friend out in the country ( his gst k and n and intake same ass me except my exhaust is cheap and came with my car) and well my tranny blew out and we got are money back and tomorrow im going car shopping. most likely i will replace with another gsx with manual or a gsr or type r tune in later to fine out. rendog24 05-06-2002, 12:20 AM what the fuck did you just say???????? kidrocket 05-06-2002, 01:02 AM ill bet if i didnt know how to launch an auto id break the tranny too spy54 05-06-2002, 01:53 AM so you just destroyed the tranny on a gsx? impressive Self 05-06-2002, 11:00 AM Originally posted by kidrocket ill bet if i didnt know how to launch an auto id break the tranny too It's actually not as hard as you might expect. That's the risk in buying used performance vehicles. Especially turbo-charged ones. You can almost be assured that the previous owner beat it to death. The words "turbo" and "long-lasting" DO NOT GO TOGETHER! It's hard on the engine, believe that. Even if it's at "moderate" boost, you're still asking the engine to handle conditions it WAS NOT designed for. And that's not even the half of it. When buying a used car like teh GSX yo have soo much more to worry about besides the engine. The transmission, clutch(if it's auto), axles, things like that all have to be considered because the entire vehicle is worn down when it is beat on by the driver. Basically what I'm saying is to reaaaallllyyy be careful when buying a used performance vehicle. We thought he was gonna lose, and he did, but we didn't know the GSX was auto. Yeah the Mitsubishi tranny's need a lot of work before you can beat the sh!t out of them. If not then many turbo cars like Grandnationals, WRX Imprezas, ect ect... would crap out, and i know of many factory turbo cars that run well, eventhough they are old. Just wondering kidrocket 05-09-2002, 05:42 PM granted S2Corolla 05-09-2002, 06:31 PM Just like kidrocket said, if you don't know how to launch in an auto it's easy to break it. Even in a n/a car, if you don't know what the hell you're doing you can break it. Hell, if you don't know what you're doing when you're pouring milk in a bowl of cereal you can mess that up too. It's just EASIER to break a transmission when you don't know what you're doing AND it has a forced induction motor. Mitsubishi tranny's, auto's that is, take a lot of beatings and are known to break only because the owners do stupid things to peel out or launch right, when they should just torque brake, wait for green and stomp on the gas, even torque braking isn't recommended with the stock torque converter. You need to get a shift kit and stronger clutch packs in order to RACE an automatic transmission. I had a 1968 Firebird with a 400 cubic inch 6.6 liter engine dyno'd at 375 hp at the wheels, (after mods of course). It was paired up with a turbo 400 transmission mated to a B&M ripper shifter. That transmission lasted me exactly 85 runs without maintenance other than common tune up's. I let my dad borrow the car for one day, and he called me from the shop. Why? Because he's used to 4/5 speed manual transmissions when it comes to racing, so he didn't know what the hell he was doing. Hope I've cleared up any confusion. Oh and whprelude, Eclipse GS's and RS's are by far weaksauce in the sport compact car community IMO. But I've seen an Eclipse GSX with just a turbo upgrade and exhaust break off a Corvette in a 1/4 mile run. S2Corolla 05-09-2002, 06:36 PM To end the story about my Firebird. What my dad did to kill everything I worked to do to that car, he revved the engine up to about 4300 rpm, and snapped it into drive, he cracked my rear driveshaft, and my tranny in half because he also didn't check the transmission oil, because he DIDN'T KNOW IT HAD ANY!!! (manual tranny's use a grease rather than transmission fluid in auto's) Polygon 05-09-2002, 06:48 PM Originally posted by ScoobySnacks It's actually not as hard as you might expect. If not then many turbo cars like Grandnationals, WRX Imprezas, ect ect... would crap out, and i know of many factory turbo cars that run well, eventhough they are old. Just wondering I guess I will correct you. There are reasons that some turbocharged cars don't last that long. Mostly it has very little to do with the engine quality or the turbo quality. I really matters on the driver. You can't take a car with a turbo out and drive it hard and then just turn it off. It is not the hard driving that is killing it, though it isn't good to drive that way all the time, it is the fact that they just shut off the car. In a normally aspirated car that is fine, but not for a turbocharged car. The impeller in the turbo spins at 100,000+ RPMs and they get rather hot. Now when you just shut it down after running it hard the oil in the turbo doesn't have a chance to be pumped out and the turbo doesn't get a chance to cool down. The oil builds up around the bearings and boils. Dirt builds up after time of doing this over and over again and slowly wears away at the bearings. The signs of this are during acceleration the car will hesitate like you had water in the engine, bad throttle position sensor, or burned plugs, or a cold cylinder. It does this because the impeller is keeps caching because of the worn bearing and is not pumping air like it should. This is why people think they don't last that long, it is because most people have no idea how to maintain and take care of a turbocharged car. It is a good idea to just let the car idle for about 30 seconds to let the turbo cool. My car has close to 150,000 miles on it and the turbo still puts out 14 PSI of boost. The engines are built to take it as well. In fact I can safely run 30 PSI of boost on my stock turbo, engine, and internals the only thing I would have to change is the intercooler. S2Corolla 05-09-2002, 07:16 PM Wow... Didn't know that. Guess we learn something new every day. That information is highly useful to me Polygon, for that I am grateful, especially considering the guy I was gonna get a GSR off of, backed down on the deal and I was strongly considering a used 94 RX-7. Is there anything else that might prove to be useful information about stock turbo sports cars? I know that the first thing to upgrade is recommended to be the blowoff valve. Polygon 05-09-2002, 09:20 PM That is one thing you may want to look at, but really the first thing I would look at is the bleeder valve. It is the cheapest mod for a turbocharged car. Someone can change that very easily to run more boost. The problem with this is running more boost than the engine should be running, plus the fact if they don't change the fuel to air mixture ratio they could really fubar that engine cause' it will run lean. So if you are going to play with the bleeder valve, talk to a tech at you local performance shop or dealership to see what kind of boost the engine is meant to take without further reinforcement or replacement sleeves, bearings, crank, head, pistons, rods, and all that fun stuff. And remember to change that pesky fuel to air mixture ratio. ;) EDIT: I almost forgot, you can take a turbocharged car to the dealership and they can run tests on the turbo that will tell you how many pounds of boost the turbo/turbos are running among other things. This may help you find out if they have been mistreating the car. YOUNGSTER 05-12-2002, 04:36 PM the reason why i lost is because his engine if fully built with jg intake with enlarged troatal bodie, intake, exhaust. i think the has high compression pistons. he has lots of stuff. its fast as hell and another thing it was a full quarter mile he plus i didnt get a good start. and for my tranny my car had a 119 thousand miles. i migh buy a gst with greddy 3.5 inch exhaust and an k & n filter. for 9 thousand its a 98. but its a convertable for now though i have a 97 honda hatch that im trying to sale my mom wants to sell it for like 6,500 to pay it off. kidrocket 05-12-2002, 05:02 PM what grade are you in? you write like my 7 yr old brother that i dont have. He took me for a drive and we were driving on the country, barely any cars. As we go around a curve we see a car approaching quickly. As it gets closer i can see it's a silver RX-7. He went into the other lane and pulled up beside us.....sort of taunting us. We stopped at a stop sign and he was reving his engine. Then he just took off. The neighbors father quickly said, "Don't tell your mother about this!" and took off after him. We dragged for about a mile to the next intersection. Not to mention he just got a brand new engine put in the AMX. That really put us ahead. We won it......sweet American muscle! He still has the AMX. I ought to take a picture of it.
