I own a '00 Impreza 2.5RS, love it to death, but i've noticed, as well as everyone else whose ridden in it, that it makes a very loud rubbing noise in the rear mostly on the drivers side, I asked friends and family and everyone was saying its the wheel bearing, I also searched this forum and someone else had a similar problem. So I got the wheel bearing on drivers side replaced, but it still makes the noise.
It gets louder when I turn right, and quieter when I turn left, but its always there. I'm clueless now, please help

I had this problem, and it WAS the bearing.. but perhaps if not the bearing (which your mechanic should have been honest enough to tell you it was or wasnt)being bad, the other possibility is the tire. easiest way to tell if this is it is to have the tires rotated Front to back and vice versa... if the noise changes locations you found it.
FYI... if it is the tire it needs replacing. when belts begin to seperate, the tread wanders, making that rubbing noise.

I'm almost positive that it's not the tires, cuz they only have about 15k miles on them and have lots of tread left, but i will rotate them anyways. I think my mistake was to take it to a tire store to have the bearing replaced, and I did take a look at it after they worked on it, and it looked almost like no work was done at all. I am not too familiar with the hub assembly, if thats what its called, but can't you see the outside of the bearing when the axle nut is removed? If so, then I know for a fact that they didn't replace it.
any suggestions are appreciated

Yes.... you remove the axle nut, and the outside of the bearing is visible. there were grey shavings in my dust cup, but not many. Mine is AWD, and the bearing had to be pressed on to the axle. The whole shebang cost about $90 at my local mechanic. The bearing was about 45 of that.

Well I figured out what the problem was, the mechanic replaced the bearing on the right rear side, and it should have been the left rear side. They swore up and down that the work order said right rear, but I showed them my copy of the work order and it said left rear, so they replaced the left and right side for the price of one. All better know, thanks for your input.
