The engine on this is brand spankin new! I changed my oil after 500 miles like my warranty stated, which was about 2-3 weeks ago, and yesterday i got this light. Also the Battery logo came on too.

After it came on I turned the engine off and back on and both went away. Today, they came on again, but i immediately turned the car off and then back on and both lights were gone.

I might also add that the lights came on after around 30 mins - 1 hour after I had driven it for the first time that day.

To make my self more clear
1. drove car to friends (no light on startup)
2. upon cranking car to leave friends about 1 hour later (lights on)

Day 2
1. drove car to get haircut (no light on startup)
2. upon cranking to leave the place (lights on)

What do you guys think. Should I get it checked and if so should I maybe make an appointment as this may be a serious problem and I need to warn the shop, or is it ok to drive it. I'll be leaving for VA Tech in 2 weeks and I will be taking my car so I need it to be reliable. Thanks!

I think both problems are related. First, take the car back to the place where the new engine was installed and tell them what is happening. Second, make sure the belt is not slipping. For the battery light and the oil light to come on at the same time there has to be an intermittant signal such as a loss of voltage to the system like the engine has stalled.

I would make sure that the oil pressure sending unit is new. It could be partially plugged and that is causing a restriction in the system giving you a light. Most of the GM cars have a fuel pump cutoff switch that is designed to shut the engine down when the oil pressure drops too low. Although you didn't say that the engine is stalling out. The oil pressure sending unit is where I would start.

GTP's right hpman, I'd take it back where the engine was put in. could also just be some a wireplug(s) is not completly pluged in causeing it to give intermittant readings.

I would take it back to the place where it was installed, but it's like 145 miles away from my house. I got the car fixed where it broke down b/c I knew a good company that puts in engines in that area.

But I will take it to a local shop in the area and let them know what is happening. But since its' the weekend, do you guys think it's okay to drive, or should I layoff it until I get it fixed.

Thanks for your help!

PS. On the reciept, it shows that they installed:
OIL SENDING (L) (G)

thats hard to say, if it truely has no oil pressure than you could screw up the motor, badly! theirs a oil sending unit that tells of low oil, the sending unit for the oil pressure is another sensor.
on 4cylinders it's mounted to the front camshaft housing on the drivers side of the engine. on V6 its by the oil filter. check the wires, see if something was over looked and not plugged in. still it's risky driving it not knowing for sure if thier is oil pressure . Hope this helps \,,/

just one more question.

If the oil pressure was low, would I be able to tell it while driving, b/c the first time it came on I drove it for a day at least. It was probably about 50-55 miles and i did so b/c it went away after i shut the engine off and turned it back on and I thought it was probably a missfire of something.

But the car drives better than it ever has. Great Accel there is no ticking no knocking. Basically I'm just asking if there is anything i should hear, smell, or see when I go out and check it tomorrow before (if i need to) I take it to the shop on Monday.

Also I can't believe that I forgot to mention this. I installed a system about 3 weeks ago. It's about 700-750 watts RMS, and turned up loud the lights blink. However, after I noticed the severity of the blinking lights(rarely drive at night and didn't realize this) i dtopped playing with the sub up and the blinking stopped. I plan to get a HO Alternator or a cap so I can play the sup at loud volumes, but do you think that this could be the reason the batt light is coming on along with the oil light.

my 99 has a HO alternator, w/factory radio and at night my lights dim and pulse. mostly when the AC fan is on max and you're at a stop(not on the gas). usually when the battery light comes on, the batterys toaste or on its way . just bad connections, and seeing how its a newly installed engine, can cause weird things.
chances are its the OPSU(oil pressure sending unit), but i'd hate to ruin a good engine. the odds of really diagnosing/trouble shooting without see/hearing the motor is like 10000/1.
if it was me i'd make sure it has oil pressure with a mechanical(not electric) oil pressure gauge.

I agree with the mechanical oil pressure guage. It will give you a better reading on the actual oil pressure. If the sending unit is bad on the electric one then you will get false readings.

The problem you indicated with the lights blinking is caused by the amp and speakers. Install a 1 or 2 farad capacitor between the battery and the amp and you should be able to crank it as loud as you want without any problems. Will cure the voltage drain and the blinking lights will go away.

just wanted to tell you that it was the sensor and also there was a short to ground in the battery harness.

it was checked with a mechanical gauge also.
