Supra Shopping (a bunch of questions)JanusQM 08-05-2005, 03:12 PM I just started a new job that pays quite a bit more than any of my previous ones. And even though I would like more than anything to restore my '84 Celica GT, just getting the body rust sanded, bondoed, and painted, and a new hatch because that's beyond redemption, as well as a list of other big ticket repairs, it just wouldn't be worth it. So I've decided to ride the Celie out until it dies (taking care of it and all, but not restoring it), all the while saving the money that I would have spent on restorations, on one of my dreams... a Supra. I'm well aware that there is a pretty aweful hype around these cars. Especially it seems on the 93-whenever years thanks to street modders, I mean, just look at eBay, 30-40 thousand for a mid-ninetys Supra? insane. Would I need to change my pants if I were to get one of those? yes. But I'd also be around 5 digits in the hole, so I'm crossing those years out. What I'm looking for are the 80's Supras, I think. Especially the years when it was still the Celica Supra. Because I think replacing an 84 Celica with an 84 Supra would be pretty ironic. I have a bunch of questions though. Some of it has to do with the fact that I have no knowlage or experiance with turbos and targas... which both are aweseome to me and Supras have them both. -So what should I look for when it comes to mid-80s Supras? How rare are they and what kind of shape are they usually in? -Do they have any general problems that seem to happen to all of them? (i.e. 3rd Gen Celica hatch rust) -I gather they had inline-6's but are there turbo charged versions? or can you add an aftermarket turbo? -Would it be difficult to find a low mileage replacement and or improved motor or replacement parts in general? -Did the older Celica Supras have targa tops available? or did that only come later in the late 80's? and what are some things to look for to see if the t-tops leak or whatever? - Are they expensive to maintain? I wouldnt think they would be, they are of course, Toyotas, but you never know... - and what should I expect to pay for one in decent or good condition? KBB says under 2k, for one that was on eBay for 3 thou, and the reserve isnt met yet. No one person needs to answer them all, but if one person answers one question at a time I'd be happy and gratefull. I can't wait to get one of these cars, I'm excited. I don't know much about the Celica Supra's but the MKIII supra turbo's are a bargin. I saw a clean 89 turbo 5spd here in dallas the other day for 6k, you just can't beat that. As to the MKIV TT prices, I would not look for them to drop too much, the demand will keep the price of even the cheapest MKIV in the mid 20's for some time to come, in fact in the past 3 years value of the car has risen. The N/A MKIV's have come down a lot lately though, you can get a 97 N/A with 100k on it for around 10k, swap in a turbo motor, 6spd, and rear end and your looking at around 20k for a Turbo MKIV. JanusQM 08-12-2005, 12:17 PM hmmm, fantastic. I think I'll be looking at late 80's Supra Turbo's then. I've seen a few around that have had Camaro Z28 5.6 liter engines swapped in... I was speechless when I saw it. But I think that a Supra may be my next car. hooray! GadflyII 08-12-2005, 12:24 PM hmmm, fantastic. I think I'll be looking at late 80's Supra Turbo's then. I've seen a few around that have had Camaro Z28 5.6 liter engines swapped in... I was speechless when I saw it. But I think that a Supra may be my next car. hooray! What a waste of a Supra. Why would anyone drop an 1940's era (in terms of engineering) POS HEAVY motor, and dropt it in a Supra? You would be better served dropping in a 2jz-gte, or if you really want to get loopy, a later model V6, or V8 from Toyota. I have seen plenty of MKIII's making over 500rwhp, which is more than you would get out of that z28 motor without a major build up, which would cost more than a MKIV. lilchris6916 08-18-2005, 06:12 AM i saw the supra with the camero engine in it it was a real tight fit but dumb none the less my dad loved it he hates all imports but besides that the 88 supras have real weak head gasket umm yes you can fine aftermarket turbos for them t61 for example the where mad with targa tops and such but the hard tops are harder to find ummm there is much more just gemme a holler lilchris6916 08-18-2005, 06:13 AM i saw the supra with the camero engine in it it was a real tight fit but dumb none the less my dad loved it he hates all imports but besides that the 88 supras have real weak head gasket umm yes you can fine aftermarket turbos for them t61 for example the where made with targa tops and such but the hard tops are harder to find ummm there is much more just gemme a holler vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
