Leak behind passenger seat when it rains

We had several days of rain a few weeks ago. And I practically live out of my car. It's an 01 Grand Am GT. Anyways, there was a nice little pile of things behind the passenger seat. And in that pile was a book a friend loaned me. Unfortunately it was at the bottom of the pile and it was SOAKING wet. The top of the pile was dry - so it was clear that it was leaking from the bottom up. There was quite a bit of water there. Very disappointing. I'm pretty sure it was related to the rain (I read the post about the leak associated to the AC). Any thoughts on this? My brother is pretty good around cars and he's working on my car this weekend. I was hoping he could patch the leak as well - but where is it coming from? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. It could be your sunroof drain - plugged. It's a common issue in Grand Am's - the sunroof drain plugs and then the water runs down the B pillar and under the carpet.

have you taken your taillights off or unscrewed them lately? I had that problem and it turns out that i didnt tighten them enough and water was leaking through them into my trunk...once in the trunk it eventually filled up my spare tire compartment and started sloshing forward onto my floor in the back. It was a smelly mess to clean up everytime it rained. I suppose its a longshot that u and i have the same problem but its a possibility

I haven't done anything with my tail lights and I have checked the trunk. It is completely dry.

Can someone tell me how to check the sunroof drain?

Thanks a bunch!

I have a 99' GA and i had the same problem. The dealer said they couldnt find the sorce. This was is 2002, a few months ago I found a GM TEch LINK book dated August 1, 2001. This a dealer, sent monthly too the mechanics. This is what they say:

Front Carpet
Passenger Side
Water Leak
Owners of some 1999-2001 Alero
and Grand Am models may comment
about a mildew odor, windshield fogging,
or wet carpet on the passenger side. And
in ambient temperatures below 32° F, the
blower may not operate due to ice.
The foam water dam under the black
beauty panel may be mis-positioned,
missing, or not adhered properly.
On vehicles with foam mis-positioned
or not adhered
properly
Remove and discard the original foam
part. Clean the metal surface with an
alcohol based cleaner.
Install the new part, properly center-ing
the part over the HVAC air intake
opening.
On vehicles built without a
foam dam and old style
beauty panel
Install 18 mm foam.
On vehicles with no foam,
or with 18 mm foam and
new style beauty panel
Install 25 mm foam.
– Thanks to Ray Romeo
Location of foam
Old style panel, top
New style panel, bottom
Now I dont know Ray and apparentlly my loco dealershit doesnt know Ray either. This did fix my floods, I had a great deal of explaining to my children who I wrongly blamed for the messes(leaving windows open, using the back pockets of front seats as CUP holders).
Hope this helps with your dalema. \,,/ \,,/
