Junkyard cluster

97 grand am se, 2.4l, 5 speed, 85k miles

Installed a junkyard cluster that had 138k miles. My car only has 85k miles on it. Is there any way to move the old mileage assy to the new cluster, or anyway to roll back the junkyard cluster to match my current mileage? (I work with electronics on a daily basis, so actually moving it wouldn't be that hard I'm thinking. Just wouldn't want to take out a screw and have stuff flying and never getting it back in right. If there is a anti-tamper thing in there or something like that.)

I don't want to do anything illegal, and I'm thinking this might be. Just would like to hear from the experts on what I should be doing.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think that you should tamper with the milage on the junkyard but you may want to call a local dealer or state inspection station and ask for instruction on the proper way to handle your situation.

There was just a long thread on disconnecting the odometer that is big time illegal, however your case is different and I would think that there is a legal proceedure to make the odometer correct.

Sorry I could not be of any more help, but make sure you get everything in line legally, just so you don't have any hastles down the road.

Good luck.

Normally an instrument cluster swap is done by the dealership, but if you know any local mechanics that do state inspections they should be able to help you with the paperwork. In NH you have to send the paperwork in and you get a tag to put on the door id plate indicating when the odometer was replaced. If you take it to the dealership, they will probably want to do the installation as well just so they can charge you (greedy bastards).

I believe in PA you have to have the milage verified and get a form notarized to keep in the vehicle for any odometer changes.
