Here's the problem. My taillights went out and my mechanic says it's my light sensor. I need to know where the sensor is in the car in order to repair it. If I can bypass it, that would be cool. If anybody knows anything, please respond to this column or send me email!

Light sensor? Hmmmm....when tailights go out I check both the fuse and the light bulbs. That's it. Either I'm a little behind the times or you need to get a new mechanic. I think he's looking at your wallet not your tailights, that is unless he is referring to some kind of short circuit or pinched wire somewhere. My 87 never suffered from a light sensor malfunction. It just went through a fair number of light bulbs. Best of luck.

The light sensor is inside the trunk on the left (driver's side) behind some trunk insulation or padding. Just pull back the padding and you will see it. It's shaped like a box. If memory serves me correct, I think it's yellow in color, but don't quote me on that since I'm not absolutely positive.

Hello, I have a 1989 camry that had a similar problem with the Light sensor/ (real name) Lamp failure sensor burning out. I found out it was bad light bulbs for the brakes that was causing the problem. I replaced the bulbs and the problem was solved. :grinyes: Now I have a new problem. The idiot light on the dash that lets me know if one of the bulbs in the rear of the car is burned out, has been lighting up 80% of the time as soon as I start the car. The odd thing is when I checked my rear lights (when the idiot light is on)their were no burned out bulbs. :screwy: Its no biggie but seems very odd to me. any help/advice/input would be great. Thank You, JOET/CAMRY

Have you looked at the middle (or "third" as some like to say) brake light? That's the one I always missed whenever my brake light warning light illuminated. :2cents:

Your light sensor is located in the trunk behind the left side wall (where your antenna motor lives if you have a pwr ant) and is indeed a yellow box. You can remove the connectors from the box and remove the circuit board from inside. Inspect the solder traces and most likely you'll find one burnt. I have soldered jumpers across the missing traces. or you can find one in the junk yard because they are very expensive. Remember you must fix the short that wiped out you sensor in the first place. The problem most likely is a wire shorted in the tailight harness that is tied to the left trunk hinge. Open the harness up and inspect and repair any bad wires!

Good luck!
