A few issues and burning carpet?

Greetings,

I've a 93 Bravada that has a few issues. The first is that the compressor isn't kicking on at all. I did cross the low pressure switch and it kicked on, guage read 0. So now I start looking for leaks.

Second, the exhaust smells like gas, and idle is rough. In reading other posts the CPI seems like a darn good place to start.

The other is that the floor in rear passangers side gets really hot, and has in fact burned the carpet a bit. Could my cat. be bad? Anyone experienced this one yet?

One last thing...the drive shaft frm tranny to transaxle is missing, is this common practice? Any ideas why it was done?

#1. You've got a referigant leak. Is it R12 or R134a? Does it have a blue or black cap on the suction line? If no cap, does the "fill'er up" line have threads or quick connect?

#2. Yes. You get an A for thread reading.

#3. The leaky fuel lines and/or CPI is overworking the cat.converter and will eventually burn up the innards.

Last thing. There's likely a problem with the transfer case or the previous owner was trying to improve the fuel milage caused by the leaky fuel system. I'd start checking the boneyards for another shaft to restore the AWD feature.

I've been holding pressure for about 36 hours with no loss, the air isn't as cold as what it was with R12, nor is the compressor kicking on unless I short it. I've ordered a low pressure side switch for R134a. Am I on the right track?

You need at least 25 psi on the suction side for the compressor to pull in. If you have that then you're on the right track with the low pressure cutoff switch.
A 134a conversion requires a different compressor lubricating oil. Did you use a kit?

Yes I did use a kit, plus added a bit of stop leak as well.

i had good luck with my R-134A conversion, got the air temp at the vents down to 45%. my compressor didn't want to kick in until pressure was almost 30lbs. i stopped filling at 33lbs pressure, 40 is maxing it.

One problem with our Bravada's is the belt pulley on the AC. I know you guys wouldn't dream of getting on the loud pedal and do a passing gear charge to 5200 rpm when the trans shifts out of passing gear but if you do it with the AC on, you're spinning the compressor that same 5200 rpm...not good for bearings and seals. Another thing to keep in mind when cruising and looking(and enjoying) cool.

I drive thru the high desert in Idaho,, climbing from 2,000 feet to over 4,500 feet at speeds exceding 80 miles per hour regularly at temps well over 100 degrees. The last time I broke down out there it cost me $298 for a tow.

I converted my AC to R134A this year. One of the things I did before my first trip after the conversion was to buy an extra belt and store it in the jack compartment, just in case.
